"The Justice Department is pursuing cases against Trump's political enemies" should be stated as plainly as "The president ordered strikes against Iran." It's absurd to keep couching this in the "critics say" paradigm.

Interesting @markjacob.bsky.social point here: Why not more stand-alone stories with heds like "Trump Is Dismantling Democracy"?
"Such a headline would be easy to support with facts that the NYT and other major media report in isolation every day. They’re simply afraid to hit the total button."
I’m hoping we’re both/all wrong, but I’d be a fool to say I’m confident.
And one of my five is out! Trump continues his habit of forcing out only his female Cabinet secretaries.

We are nearing the beginning of the end. I don’t think I’m being hyperbolic when I say we’ll know if we’ve hit the point of no return by January.
It’s a good answer, but I’m wary of the totenkopf tattoo. On the other hand, he seems to have addressed it publicly—perhaps adequately—what do I know? I’m not a Maine voter anyway.

Then said Jesus, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Know how I know the Senior Service College Task Force is unserious?
- Its leader had multiple affairs and a child out of wedlock while in uniform.
- One member is known for filming screeds from a van in the NC woods
- Another member is Thomas Anderson

Sarah Longwell: We are committing superpower suicide in real time. Trump is making China Great Again. Poll: People in *every single one* of the top US-allied countries now believe it’s better to depend on China than on the US. The global balance of power is clearly tilting away from the US and toward China.
Sharkey is probably his favorite chapter, “The Scouring of the Shire” his favorite chapter.
Thucydides alert!
"What made war inevitable, in other words, was not merely the presence of rival great powers, but the fact that one of those powers was abusing the rules of the system that had enabled its rise to greatness in the first place."

Optimism is not a policy tool. If there’s no clear timeline for resolution, energy markets will price in uncertainty. And uncertainty is costly because firms can’t plan and households can’t budget.
I find joy in being able to do one thing at a time, but I can’t even read a entire post, let alone an article, paper or book, before scrolling down to the next one.
Thanks for the suggestion.
This was relevant when it was posted on Friday morning at 8 am. Then it was irrelevant after the Strait of Hormuz "opened" about 20 minutes later. But, predictably, it became relevant again yesterday morning. Now, it's more relevant than ever. What a bonkers timeline.

The piece argues that Trump’s Iran rhetoric should not be dismissed as bluff, because threats that target whole peoples and civilian life can do legal, moral, and institutional damage even when the speaker later backs down. “There’s so much going on in the world, but this is the kind of issue that I really think deserves some sustained attention.” Rachel VanLandingham, former chief of international law at U.S. Central Command, as quoted by The Atlantic “That’s a no-go zone.” Timothy Naftali, presidential historian at Columbia University, as quoted by The Atlantic “That has never happened before.” Daniel Maurer, former Army judge advocate and law professor, as quoted by The Atlantic “Or are we really at risk of the U.S. committing the gravest mass of war crimes since the Second World War?” Gabor Rona, professor of international human rights at Cardozo School of Law, as quoted by The Atlantic
⚖️🔥 Trump threatening to erase “a whole civilization” and Hegseth boasting of “no quarter” is not hard-nosed statecraft. It is outlaw-state rhetoric from the top of the U.S. chain of command — and backing down later does not wash it clean. #Trump #Iran #WarCrimes #InternationalLaw
Joseph Schwartz’s case is the latest in a string of health care fraud pardons by Trump.
The president also granted clemency to nursing home magnate Philip Esformes, convicted of a $1.3B scheme, and Judith Negron, convicted in a $200M fraud case.
Virginia has the opportunity on April 21 to counter Trump‘s congressional cheating. If you’re in Virginia, or know someone who is, make a plan to go out and vote YES on Tuesday’s referendum!
