The FY 2027 NASA budget request hides its science cuts by omitting mission names instead of explicitly zeroing them out.
We did the work and found 54 missions cancelled in this proposal.
This is another extinction-level event for NASA science.

A line graph showing awards over time at NSF's SBE. The line for this year, 2026, is extremely FLAT compared to prior years. By this time in 2025, 179 grants had been awarded. In 2021, it was 243. This year... 16.
NSF's Social, Behavioral and Economic Directorate has awarded only 16 grants since October.
No big budget cuts went through. No freeze. The courts have acted to keep funds flowing at every turn. The money just isn't going out.
Why...?

fwiw i do think they are louder in arizona for some reason
I feel bad for these PIs though - I suspect they applied for funds pre-DOGE, without knowledge that their projects would be co-opted like this. Or at least that's what I would guess based on my convos with folks that managed to get awards in FY 2025

NEW: The Institute of Museum and Library Services is now accepting applications for its 2026 grant cycle.
But this time, it has unusually specific criteria: It “particularly welcomes” projects that align with President Donald Trump’s vision for America.
"The propaganda is going to get a lot worse and more pervasive before it gets better... our tax money was given to a private business actively destroying our public education systems, [and] none of the grant money allocated for libraries and museums will go to actual libraries and museums."
a former PhD student called them "sleeping kittens," which is now what i call them too.
CS ArXiv recently banned “review and position” papers, but what are those? Do they include more generated content? Who is most affected by this change? @yanai.bsky.social and I dug into the data to find out!
Nearly 50% of Computers & Society papers might be censored, vs 3% of Computer Vision ‼️
yeah well could claude do this *writes a terrible recursive function that consumes all the memory and crashes my laptop*

i teach grad level digital preservation classes and would love to incorporate a new version into that
I've been talking about both doctoral study (with academic jobs as the goal) AND tenure for YEARS in terms of RISK MANAGEMENT. It is a very calculated, and increasingly speculative, risk. You have to treat it that way.
Faculty hate it when I do this. Especially about tenure.

LIBRARIES WIN IN COURT. Federal court issues permanent injunction in Rhode Island V. Trump, stops the dismantling of the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The court ruled that all actions taken by the Administration to dismantle IMLS are nullified. This injunction takes immediate nationwide effect: all grants, in every state and territory. The Administration is stopped from taking these actions again in the future. Show up for our libraries, American Library Association.

• Professors should never put a student's words or work into an AI software without their consent. • Professors should also be transparent about their Al usage with grading, curriculum building, and any other way they might use it in their teaching. • If a professor does use Al chatbots in the classroom, they should explain their reasoning behind this decision and how its usage will help students meet learning outcomes. • Professors should additionally respect a student's choice to refuse Al. To do this, it would be ideal that they have assignments that students can choose from that do
