Maybe! I don't know enough about their original geneses to say, but the only one that really made a name for itself in agriculture was Decatur; Springfield, Champaign and Bloomington are institutional/business and Peoria is industrial.

I find it very satisfying that all the significant downstate Illinois cities (Peoria, Springfield, Bloomington, Decatur and Champaign) form a roughly equidistant constellation on the map.

It makes sense based on why these cities exist and how they fit into the modern economy, but there's basically an inverse relationship between the ones with dense cores/interesting geography and ones with good opportunities/amenities

Granted I've never lived downstate, but having spent time in all of the cities, my rankings might be-
