so I guess it's mainly the denoiser (confusingly also called "DLSS" for obnoxious brand reasons) that melts everything

I'm assuming the pathtracer output is so noisy that nvidia is effectively just replacing every pixel with "here's what a statistically-similar game screenshot might look like"

okay yeah I messed around with it and the weird ai smeary shit only happens with path tracing. if you turn that off, everything looks like normal videogame graphics and toggling DLSS on/off doesn't make much visual difference

anyway I played a bunch of pragmata last night and it's fun as hell. art direction's also great even if the driver software for your gpu might be trying to Worsen it for strange ideological reasons

separately, completely unrelated to the game, jensen huang [redacted] AND his stupid fucking jacket

speaking practically though:
- Last time I tried DLSS it was almost indistinguishable from native 4k
- This time any text rendered in the game world is unreadable melted blobs that change shape whenever the camera moves

dunno if nvidia made the upscaler worse, or if their denoiser's just Like That

I haven't tested it extensively; maybe the artifacts are mostly limited to path-tracing mode? there's like a dozen completely different technologies that nvidia just blanket refers to as "DLSS3". I think the path tracer uses it for denoising +restir+TSR instead of just upscaling the rendered frame

are the newer DLSS versions getting more gloopy AI slime artifacts over time or something? I used in cyberpunk and it was mostly unnoticeable except for occasional ghosting/motion artifacts, but pragmata with path tracing looks like some melted midjourney shit. idk what's going on but it's wild

the aesthetics whip ass so my point remains unchanged

I will say one advantage of genAI phenomenon is that it's made it easier to tell which people I know are Evil.
