I took a topology exam once. It was both open-book and closed-book.

That's the one, and it's a fun one to count the blocks! #elemMathChat
yes it does #elemMathChat
Yes! #elemMathChat
A normal one compared to the steeper ones but it might be kind of steep to actually walk on! #elemMathChat
#ElemMathChat Q8 That’s all for tonight Thank you for joining us! Hope you had fun and long live positive feelings about asking questions!
Hmmmm, I think so, if I am understanding what you mean by the face! #elemMathChat
Haha, great question and yes it does! #elemMathChat
Good question, yup #elemMathChat
Good question, nope #elemMathChat
Yes, questions are cooler than answers! #elemMathChat
Twenty four clusters of tiles that look like 3D clusters of cubes, each with a differing number of cubes.
#ElemMathChat Q7 “Last Tile Standing” is another one of my favorites (for Tile Farm’s version go to tiletalk.tilefarm.com). I’ve chosen one of the 24 patterns above, can you think of yes/no questions that could help eliminate options? Ask and I’ll answer yes/no. Can comment below if easier.
Yes, I really like this future remembering exercise! #elemMathChat
Great Q's, and I understand why your brain says space invaders, even though I think there are no hexagons in space invaders? #elemMathChat
A6 How many hexagons did it take to make this whole thing? How many blue hexagons are there for every white hexagon? How many types of “triangular things” are there made out of hexagons? How many white hexagons are in the largest unit that repeats? #ElemMathChat
The green in the center is quite interesting, I didn't quite notice that. #elemMathChat
Made with a coloring algorithm activity led by @gwenbeads.bsky.social at @gathering4gardner.bsky.social
A blue and white pattern seemingly made out of hundreds of hexagons colored somewhat randomly but with a certain pattern.
#ElemMathChat Q6 “How Many?” is another great question asking activity (shout out @triangleman.bsky.social ) (for Tile Farm’s version go to tiletalk.tilefarm.com). What “how many” style questions can you ask about the above pattern? Can you think of one you can’t answer?
I like this and will need to try it. Sometimes need that extra little boost of having to do something specific. #elemMathChat
Yes to all of these, and especially making your share of mistakes ;) #elemMathChat
A5 I wonder “what is the ratio of yellow to blue?” I wonder “does this relate to flowers somehow?” I wonder “how many triangles are there?” #ElemMathChat
Yes, I think about this a lot, minor moments can be so negative, but on the bright side, one little moment can also have a trajectory changing positive impact.
A thirty sided polygon made out of thousands of isosceles triangles.
#ElemMathChat Q5 “Notice And Wonder” is an obviously great question asking activity (shout out @mfannie.bsky.social ). Can you ask some questions about things you wonder about the above pattern? (Made in Tile Farm Studio)
Yes, I love this. I always find admitting I don't know something to be so powerful for students.
A4: I think a lot of the negativity around question asking comes from large groups. In groups of 2-3, students feel much more comfortable. I think activities that involve question asking as the norm really get kids comfortable asking questions (incoming . . . ). #ElemMathChat
#ElemMathChat Q4 Do you have any teaching techniques or activities that get your students more confident about asking questions?
I will have to check it out!
A3 Whenever I teach any class I feel it takes some time and a lot of work for students to get comfortable asking questions. #ElemMathChat
#ElemMathChat Q3 What is the question-asking culture like in your classroom(s)?
