Jpeg2k is what I was thinking of. Just always haunts me. One of the first things I did at Unidata was taking the ancient jj2000 code we used for that and figure out how much to comment out to avoid crashing the Java 8 compiler.

Curious what compression that would support. I guess WASM makes things better, but compiling and distributing jasper is never trivial.
But think of the potential things that could be done to that with none of the proceeds supporting the campaign.
Bad things are happening but at least Alex Jones is sad—that’s a beacon of hope I can enjoy.
Full episode is worth a watch if you want the hear the full saga.
Before focusing on the next budget, can we start by making sure the last budget actually matters and is enforced?
I miss Links so much
Yeah. Didn’t mean to be so crabby. Apologies for that. Need a margarita.
I have lived from Kentucky to Colorado and I have heard this saying. I do wish people would stop saying as if it’s something unique about where they live.
Apparently less important than “outbreed the dark people”
Also love that it’s “toxic career-first culture” and has nothing to do with the wage stagnation and the need for a dual-income household in order to afford housing.
Wait, are teens supposed to be helping birth rates or are they supposed to “not have sex and babies unless you can afford them”?
Ah, “Glass Houses” is missing from that list.
Well fuck. After all that, all I have is Greatest Hits vol I & II that got me hooked growing up.
How does one build the expertise and experience to evaluate the generated solution with spending the time previously building solutions oneself?
To all who celebrate
I lost the better part of 2 work weeks trying to figure out what Cartopy’s lat/lon “PlateCarree” projection should do (since it was changed by PROJ 9.8) because it was more interesting than what I “should” have been doing.
Solving the puzzle (“optimizing”) is frequently more interesting than our daily bullshit
4. “Good” programmers are those willing to throw away the first “draft” and learn from it
5. Yes, there are hard problems, but being able to deal with those is not well correlated with making long-term useful code
1. Write something “good enough” as quickly as possible. Chasing perfection will keep you from making anything.
2. Computer science/software engineering disciplines can show you more options
3. Don’t try to generalize until you have n>=3 cases. YOU WILL GET THIS WRONG if you try to generalize before
I spent so much of Act II of my career (when I decided I wanted to be a “pro coder”) trying to learn how to write code correctly the first time. Lessons I finally took away after wasting so much time:
Literally has nothing to do with the original thread, but good on you for capitalizing on someone else’s work. Also, congrats on making sure I never give your product a second look.
Why I’m always deeply uncomfortable with colleagues saying “I’m not a real software engineer”. IMO, so much of “real” SE is willingness to revisit and improve code. Almost no one (read: actually no one) gets it right the first time. We revise manuscripts fine, but somehow revising code is weakness.
Unfortunately GEMPAK isn’t good at much else.
Good luck taking that knowledge you learned in synoptic and applying it to plotting your research radar data, or custom netCDF model output.
I feel like if you’re shitting on Waffle House (from the comments), your expectations were too high. It’s a fast food breakfast diner, and it has plenty hit that mark for me.
Happy Easter, shitter's full
Also the same morons up in arms over government “death panels” while not giving a second thought to insurance denying life-saving treatment and parroting that “we have the greatest healthcare in the world”
Same morons think we need laws protecting against “chemtrails” but not the EPA to protect against pesticides or forever chemicals
Also, this implies that one is saying:
1. USSR is complicit because otherwise they totally would have called us out, as our rival
2. We apparently faked landing on the moon no fewer than 7 times (up to Apollo 18), even though the country stopped caring after *maybe* the second time?
We are literally too stupid to continue as a species.
Gotta go 2x2
