A group of planetary scientists and researchers gather to listen to a talk about Venus; beyond, the Ohio River.

I am really proud to have played a small part in helping organise the 2026 Planetary Science Community Workshop at the Kentucky Science Center in Louisville, KY!

We're a small workshop, but we're entirely community driven. And maybe the start of something bigger.

NASA science faces 'very serious threat' from new White House budget, experts say "This is the least transparent NASA budget request I've ever seen — and I've literally looked through every single one since 1960."

Obama "Hope" poster except sepia with the tagline "TAUPE"

I spent too long making this. I'm supposed to be working on a DOE proposal (due the 20th), a NASA proposal (due last Friday), and two conference talks (that I'm leaving for tonight).

Only Congress can cancel Gateway. KSP isn't real life engineering. The timeline is ludicrous. The TRLs are too low. No Mars scientists were consulted about Skyfall. Instruments have _not_ been solicited. CLPS won't lower costs long term. Missions are not dice rolls. This will be bad for science.

Elon hates NASA because its existence and success counters the myth that we need billionaires or a profit motivation to do cool things in space.

Anyways, nationalize spacex.

There are no dumb questions, but there certainly are a lot of dumb answers.

If you don't know, just be silent. The world needs to be quieter.

Who is going to come back in the next 3 years when Russ "the NIH cured my daughter's disease so now I'm going to cancel all other research" Vought can just fire you specifically to "put [you] in trauma" during your 2-year probation?

Dems must develop specific plans to return prestige and safety to civil servant scientist positions, or people aren't coming back. Codified protections with clear recourse when violated, hiring-decision review boards appointed from the legislature rather than exec, pay increases to GS scale, & more.

NASA is also incredible because if you pay taxes, you’re a part of the mission!

We all have a stake in this incredible thing. We did it together!

It’s such a beautiful thing.

I had this thought last night that, in addition to the Challenger trauma, we all recently dealt with the (billionaire side project) Oceangate situation…which I think made us collectively forget how ABSOLUTELY METICULOUS AND CHOREOGRAPHED NASA is.

NASA folks aren’t amateurs 💁🏻‍♀️

Save NASA Science Action Hub Updates and actions on the proposed cuts to NASA science in FY 2027.

If you’ve been moved & inspired by Artemis, NASA needs your help. Literally during A2, the president proposed cutting NASA science 47%, canceling 54 missions, including many already in-flight. To help stop these cuts, check out @planetarysociety.bsky.social www.planetary.org/save-nasa-sc...

The Planetary Society urges Congress to reject historic cuts to NASA,… A statement in response to the release of the FY 2027 top-line budget request for NASA, which would cut the agency by 23% and slash the Science Mission…

I will waste no time reminding everyone that the President has again proposed an extinction-level budget for NASA.

47% cut to science.

And even though Congress sets budgets, NASA will---like last year---start planning as though this were the real budget.

Stupid. Pointless. Destructive. Insulting.

I just watched the video again because of awesomeness reasons, but after the roll at T+0:50 watch for a few seconds and look at the edge of the plume about a length of the rocket down. The little undulations of the vortex shedding are there too. I never get tired of staring at the rocket plumes.

Agree. I spent a minute trying to ascertain the timescale. But my sense is the spacing of those vortices could be consistent with the frequency of pulsation in the real video.

CFD Simulation of Artemis launch

I grabbed a screenshot at 0:34 (very cool simulation, BTW; thanks for sharing). I numbered 4 regions of the some sequential vortices in the plume near the surface. Again, rocket fluid dynamics is very different than GFD so grain of salt, but it's the propagation of those that I'm thinking of.

Yes, when it exits it is essentially constant, but I believe those are shock waves from the supersonic exhaust interacting with surrounding air. The pulses are from vortex shedding, but this isn't my type of fluid dynamics, so it could involve the flame diverter too in some way.

...the pulsation of the exhaust at T+3 sec.

You must watch until booster separation at 2:24. Wow.

American science is at risk not because of budget cuts, but because of executive interference
American science is at risk not because of budget cuts, but because of executive interference In this clip excerpted from my recent livestream, I explain why American science is currently at existential risk, and how the current crisis stems not primarily from budget cuts from Congress, but instead from direct interference from the executive branch. I discuss the immediate implications of th

I've excerpted a ~5 minute segment from my recent livestream discussing my deepening concerns regarding on the ongoing (and accelerating) threats not only to weather and climate science, but American science leadership and continuity at large.

I heard the not implausible suggestion that they're doing this to hurt scientific societies.

The FY 2027 NASA budget request hides its science cuts by omitting mission names instead of explicitly zeroing them out.

We did the work and found 54 missions cancelled in this proposal.

This is another extinction-level event for NASA science.
