For solidarity with my fellow ECRs I'll share my favourite interview feedback. For an 18th century job I was told
'You came second. The only difference between the two of you was that they knew exactly what admin task they wanted to do alongside teaching.'
....they hired a 17th centuryist 🤣
This is worrying.
We would not only lose the great work being done but any further progress
Currently Museums Wales do little/nothing to commemorate Welsh Romani history/culture or Welsh Kale Romanies - but they are at least open to talking about it
I fear that won't be the case if Reform win
On this specifically. I stopped research last year because of the attitudes of academics towards me & our history.
But people like you & other Romani people I've spoken to made me see its our history not theirs & its our way to keep our culture & history alive in spite of them.
So thank you!
There are also even more of us ECRs that never get opportunties casual or otherwise.
Your PhD, publications and experience just get 'feedback' that makes it clear your application wasn't read.
Today we also open the call for applications to our 2026-27 Master's Scholarships programme: bit.ly/4dTHmXe
Scholarships of £5000 are for students from groups currently underrepresented in academic history to study for an MA in history or a related subject. Closing date: Friday 5 June #Skystorians
We are looking at a painting of St Liphardus - a 6th-century lawyer, hermit and abbot in Meung-sur-Loire near Orléans, France. He is wearing bishops clothing including a surplus and mitre and is holding a crook. On a lead is a small knee high green and blue dragon.
We’re very sorry sir but you cannot bring your emotional support dragon in here.
You are aware you're Gadjosplaining my own ethnicity to me right?
Gypped is very obviously a slur but Gypsy isn't. I personally don't like it because its inaccurate, misunderstood and co-opted by other groups. But its not a slur, its early modern people thinking we came from Egypt.
There was a series of Tudor laws called the Egyptian Acts that first tried to deport all the Romanies & then either force them to settle or be killed
They were repealed in 1783 - I suspect as most of the anti-Romani provisions were in the 1744 Vagrancy Act & the death sentence wasn't used often
Death, transportation or hard labour.
Being Romani was punishable by death until 1783. British Romani history is one of very much hoping that local authorities don't enforce statutes rigorously
Gypsy is not a slur. Its a misattributation to where Romani people come from.
Many Romani people in the anglophone world call themselves Gypsies or Romani Gypsies & policing how Romani self-define is racist.
I personally have issues with the term which is why I put it in quotation marks.
These are present issues and the 1824 Vagrancy Act's role as primary anti-'Gypsy' legislation was superceded by the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022
Since Tudor times the English state has always had at least one statute designed to attack Romani culture
In addition to everything in this blog, the 1824 Vagrancy Act directly targeted itinerant Romani culture
It proscribed where they stayed whether in barns, tents or wagons
It proscribed their jobs as unlicenced travelled pedlars & tradespeople - making sure fortune tellers were mentioned as well
An enormous thank you to everyone who shared Black History Walks' event and the fundraiser for Bill Richmond and Tom Molineaux's blue plaque. A story that's visible is a story remembered.
New donations mean the campaign is nearly half way there! Good people! 🔵😊

Huge friendly waves to all recent followers joining from this pack💖 Watch this space we've got an important fundraiser launching next month to help our Romani friends in Bulgaria (and if you're a creative you can donate your games/stories/poems/art to the fundraiser here: itch.io/jam/sky-and-... )
Our Romani friends in Bulgaria have had their homes demolished. Some have been rehoused in derelict housing, others not. I'm making a bundle to raise funds for housing, wheelchairs, clothes, boots, toys for the kids etc. Please join the jam to join the bundle and help us out? itch.io/jam/sky-and-...
I'm pleased to announce I'm a founding co-editor of the new @manchesterup.bsky.social book series, Radical Histories.
Do let me know if you have a proposal for a book that fits our inclusive remit on radical histories.

Trying to complete research as an ECR
Chart showing earnings gap 10 years after graduation, associated with having been in deep poverty at age 16, adjusted for demographic and university characteristics, and further adjusted for work characteristics: England
Child poverty isn't just bad, it results in an enduring earnings gap.
The pay gap between graduates who grew up in poverty and those who didn't persists even between when they go to the same university, get the same degree and work for the same firm ⤵️

Look at pretty much every history department or the BA Postdocs its lots of Oxbridge grads and international scholars & few or no British working class or minority academics
This destruction is so easy because HE is an ivory tower of academics that with their actions infer 99% of the system is crap
Do any #earlymodern #skystorians know of online courses available along the lines of Spanish or Portuguese 'for historians'?
I have no doubt conference organisation is done to limit diversity in academic fields.
For example @bsecs.bsky.social insist on expensive & elitis (& out the way for Wales, Scotland etc) Oxford for every conference
It's PGR/ECR conference is worse.

We're seeking interdisciplinary perspectives on radicalism, protest, and the political power of print, from satirical caricatures and regional newspapers to the "hidden agency" of those working within the trade. Full submission details are included in the poster 5/5
Given how the few jobs available go to people the hiring manager knows, how exclusionary conferences are is a bigger issue than anyone thinks of.
They also show how discrimination isn't VCs it's academics

Edinburgh, Sweden, Bath & this year France. All expensive, 2 are abroad (it's a British society) & one is potentially difficult to get around being so hilly.
18th Century studies is so white & middle class by design not accident this is just one layer of conscious bias by one field.

A reminder that this is happening on Friday! Please do get in touch with either myself or @aayushigupta.bsky.social if you want the Zoom link!
Such a recruiter's market for Oxbridge who are increasingly doing similar roles.
The worst thing is they know they'll still have lots of applications & all from the backgrounds they actually want. Its an all around win.
