still can’t believe that given the choice between “bountiful, free, clean energy from the earth, wind, and sun” and “poisonous dead animal sludge price sensitive to global politics” we keep choosing the latter

Although Eberhardt largely devoted herself to the Muslim way of life, she frequently partook of marijuana and alcohol[27] and had many lovers.[28][29][30] According to a friend, Eberhardt "drank more than a Legionnaire, smoked more kief than a hashish addict and made love for the love of making love".[31] She was heterosexual, but often treated sexual intercourse as impersonal.[32] The reason for her Arabic companions' tolerance of her lifestyle has been debated by biographers. According to Mackworth, the "delicate courtesy of the Arabs" led them to treat Eberhardt as a man because she wished to live as one.[28] Eberhardt's behaviour made her an outcast with the French settlers and the colonial administration, who watched her closely.[33] Seeing no reason why a woman would choose the company of impoverished Arabs over her fellow Europeans, they eventually concluded she must be an English agent, sent to stir up resentment towards the French.[34]

U.S. Navy destroyer repeatedly warned an Iranian-flagged cargo ship to stop over a six-hour period on Sunday before firing on the ship's engine room, disabling the Iran-bound vessel to allow helicopter-borne Marines to board and seize it, U.S. Central Command said in a statement. When the crew of the Touska, the Iranian ship, ignored the American warnings, a destroyer fired its MK 45 gun into the cargo ship's engine room, Central Command said. On Sunday, Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit were conducting a search of the vessel, which is now in American custody.

One of the most blatant examples of sane-washing I've ever seen from the NYT.

This was an unarmed cargo vessel in international waters, crewed by noncombatants!

In the same manifesto, Palantir's owners argued that we need a national military draft, that soft power is over, and that we were too hard on Germany and Japan after World War II. I don't think that company should be allowed to exist anymore.

Unlike Eden II, where the video game can spasmodically stretch, ignoring material constraints, to cover all of reality, the video game in A/S/L lies underneath, a superstructure, a narrative, an arcana guiding these women’s lives, just as real– the moments where it peeks through as possibility are goosebump-raising. They cannot perceive this structure except in doubtful glimpses– it is both inside and outside them, showing us, the reader, that there is something connecting perception beyond the shadows anyone individually sees on their own wall. The shadows are shared– a reality exists that affects us whether or not we understand it. Jeanne Thornton is the best at writing teenagers and I think she is one of the greatest at writing sorcery, magic, invocation and dreams. Wroten seems to shine most when writing about dyads, mangled-frustrated romantic desire, the darkness of small children, and the indignant hope for total future purity which can still exist at the bottom of a pit.

my basic thesis is thornton is writing about people relating to each other and dreaming through the magic superstructure of the game, whereas wroten is preoccupied with relating to the Self through the game’s medium…with a christian preoccupation with dyads and purity

This review, in its non-comics-head engagement with what amounts to the first few pages, rushes the summary of the central plot, which is that Ellis (who uses they/them), in reaction to ennui and internal pain and maybe a bit of a rotten crush on a hot femme housemate, engineers a promising virtual reality where anything is possible– only to have it stolen by a stubbly professor who sells it to a wicked corporation, who use it to attempt to control everyone. The housemates, together with the professor’s genius five-year-old daughter and, eventually, the regretful, alcoholic professor himself, then attempt to wrest control of the game and the world back from the corporation. They remove corporate control of the game and then vanish into it; the world outside the game then dies. I am not sure if Wroten would agree with me, but it seems thematically linked to The Chronicles of Narnia’s final book, The Last Battle, where virtue is tested against satanic evil before yeeting everyone good into a healed world where their bodies no longer matter

One of the taking off places for writing this is that libraryjournal barely describes what eden ii is about in their review, while comicsbeat mainly just says “it’s clever” without deeply engaging in its themes

Pancreatic cancer mRNA vaccine shows lasting results in an early trial Scientists caution that more research is needed, but nearly all of the patients who responded to the personalized vaccine are still alive six years later.

We have an apparent cure for most people with pancreatic cancer—a profoundly swift, deadly cancer—and the position of the U.S. government is that it should be banned. This is real fall-of-empire stuff.

Jail Support 101 | Brooklyn Public Library Abolitionist organizer PL leads a practical workshop on how to support people who have been arrested and how to build community-based jail support networks.Registration is encouraged, but not required...

I wanna talk very briefly about jail support, what it is, and how important it is.

Jail support isn’t really for folks who want to put in an hour a month and call it a day. It requires more commitment than some other volunteer options. But it’s both very important and very meaningful work.

a map from 1918 showing the interurban network sprawling across Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio

One side obsession from my research into the 1920s is the extensive network of ELECTRIC trains that used to connect cities and towns across the central Midwest called the Interurban. We had this more than a hundred years ago. The things we had and the things we lost.

They desperately want people talking about the danger of their dogshit extruder gaining sentience, and not the fact that it is currently actually factually poisoning Black people in the poor regions where they build data centers. Or convincing people to kill themselves, etc.

People on here don't realize that reading Israeli media on its own terms can radicalize you just as much as anything else against Zionism. The vast majority of quotes I see coming out of Channels 12 and 13 are from security officials whining that Lebanese villagers are allowed to go home.

He added: "I believe very strongly that women's wards should be for biological women. What do we do about tha biological female who is a trans man, looks, sounds, presents, lives, his life as a man is biologically female? We wouldn't put him on a women's ward. That would be degrading for him and humiliating And cruel.

Wes streeting admits what he is doing is "humilating and cruel".

But only for trans men (that look and sound man enough).

Perfectly happy to inflict cruelty and humiliation on trans women.

Behold the "challenge coin" the federal government is giving to folks who worked on Minneapolis detentions and deportations

it's both predictable -- the sort of garish video-game conflict imagery in which Trump's administration revels -- and grotesque
