I am utterly shocked and saddened by the news of Andrew West‘s @babelstone.co.uk untimely passing. He was a huge inspiration, an impressive scholar, and a kind and generous person.

Have been pointing a lot of people recently to Carter Eckert's biography of Park Chung-hee to help contextualize the current moment in SK politics, and learned this morning that he's just passed away.

An incredibly generous person and brilliant scholar. May his memory be a blessing.

UM will no longer use diversity statements in faculty hiring, promotion, tenure The provost's move was applauded by critics who have called the practice "litmus tests." Advocates said the process was "preordained" and dishonest.

U Michigan will not longer ask job candidates to provide diversity statements. Seems to be an effort to mollify regents who are looking at more dramatic cuts to DEI.

Aha! I knew I didn't dream up being taught this. I took a version of this class with @pcassel.bsky.social as an MA student (zhong renjie rebellion plus some PRC), which must be where I got my notes on this from.
