American zoning and land use
Marvin was a great advocate for cycling at JTC meetings at PVPC and a good friend to me during my time as City Engineer in Easthampton. He was a regular visitor to me at City Hall, he always had thoughtful things to say and I will miss him very much.
Hey Reds. Build some housing - let kids come to your schools.
Fix zoning
Reduce car trips to European levels, medium term goal, plenty of space then for other stuff
Regional chart
It has killed Democrats brand. Build some housing already.
Laser focus on outcomes!

The U.S. doesn’t pull up the global average because it’s 5% of people, it does it because it’s a huge share of the world’s driving.
The U.S. is about 5% of population but is about 15–20% of global vehicle miles traveled (VMT) and an even higher share of high-mileage, high-speed metro driving.
Maybe municipal employees should be offered free transit pass to give up parking spot.
Physical and economic traps too.
No matter who you talk to ask a good a question about gentrification, scarcity and the pedestrian death rise since 2010 and if US zoning and land use induces car use by design in America and all its negative effects.

Running parallel to the Arabian Sea, the Mumbai Coastal Road is a new elevated expressway connecting South Mumbai to its western suburbs. But embedded within this megaproject is a less discussed, yet pioneering element: a continuous waterfront promenade with dedicated cycle track stretching 7.5 km.🧵

Bike parking on perimeter of Amagertorv Plaza. For people walking only.

Imagine a USA where all roads and road maintenance were paid for locally excepting interstates.
How much denser would cities and towns be? How many more gravel roads once you leave city, town center? Would zoning have been different?
What else ?
When homes cost about 2x average a full time adult annual income
Anything else ?
What do you notice about this photo?
Dignity. Yes.
“Conversation is not a reward to be bestowed on those with whom we agree; it’s a necessary habit in a democracy. The point is not to find agreement so much as to deepen understanding. To talk with others is to believe in the possibility of change, theirs and your own. “

If zoning didn’t exist, how much denser would US metros be? How many fewer car trips? How many fewer cars? How many fewer deaths of people in cars killed? How many fewer deaths of people walking? How much more transit? How much more bike infrastructure would have come naturally!
Those who support public housing or private lottery set asides while opposing state action to legalize much more private housing by right are defending scarcity, whether they know it or not.
