Just now I saw someone describe the fact that the gravity on Miller's Planet in Interstellar was strong enough to warp time but not strong enough to stop their spaceship taking off as a "plot hole" and I think there is no more hope for media literacy.

24hrs ago I watched a talk from Robert Eggers where he was justifying the verisimilitude of his movies by saying that period accurate sets don't make the movie good but they do allow you to accept those elements as fact which primes you to accept "satan embodied in goat form" as fact as well.

Yeah it's like "what if we made everywhere feel like a town where the only open businesses are bookies"

i think LLMs are fascinating technology with a number of likely use cases when that technology is further refined, but it doesn’t really bode well that a not-insignificant number of enthusiasts and even pioneers in LLM R&D exhibit varying degrees of superstitious belief regarding their sentience

This is all only a partially considered thought, dunk on me as you see fit.

I also don't think AI will immediately crash in a big uproar like is being anticipated - the grift is just going to slowly move to prediction markets and AI markets will maybe crash while the eyes are away from it like with all of the others.

Like, it's only purpose is to reward people for capitulating to a given social attitude while siphoning money from gambling addicts. Just all bad. Nothing good. Demented. should be immediately banned.

Anyway; the bi-annual tech-grift shift is always something bad. Crypto = bad, NFTs = bad, Web 3.0 = bad, Metaverse = bad, AI = bad (although maybe a bit more nuanced that that. I think self-hosted FOSS LLMs are morally neutral. GenAI is always evil). This grift feels particularly dystopian though.

So while this doesn't mean that "following the wider consensus" is enforced, it certainly does limit your ability to invest your money into somethings your peers do thus limiting your social mobility. It would be financially favourable to play ball.

And if those odds didn't happen organically based on actual statistics, the prediction market could just skew them towards an outcome that's favourable to the company and cite historic performances, or some nebulous social factors, as the reason why?

You could do with the cash, so you take the bet on FF winning.
You go to the polls - are you going to work against your wallet and vote left because it aligns with your beliefs, or are you going to try and secure the money by also voting FF despite that because fuckit they're going to win anyway?

Rather than explaining, I will give a working example of what I mean:
You are a broke left-leaning 20-something, and there is an election coming up.
FF and FG are neck-and-neck with surprisingly good odds on Polymarket, and the left-bloc parties are basically not contending.

Have seen little writings on how if prediction markets are widely adopted it codifies a sort of social order in a way akin to the moral panic around China's "social credit" scheme that the Yanks always propogandise against?
Maybe it's discussed widely and I'm just not seeing it, idk

it's unbelievable to me that someone could actually be a trillionaire. i think most of us have trouble internalizing how much money that truly is. let me put it in simple terms for you: a trillion dollars is three million dollars

okstupid.lol A satirical, investigative look at the digital infrastructure and tragic romance of Europe’s most confused far-right dating site. Data, pics, and laughs inside.

If you saw the story about the woman who hacked the nazi dating site and published the data, you can find it here: okstupid.lol

Have a look through, see who's nearby you and whether you recognise them. Lots of fucking freaks to keep tabs on

Don’t flake on voting just because the result is in the bag! Margin matters. Remember how awful it felt seeing Peter Casey jump from 2% polls to 23% after his attacks on travellers. A low turnout/high number of spoiled votes will be seized on by the fash. Every vote for Connolly undermines them
