Shaun Fluker predicted this on @ablawg.bsky.social, a must-read on the electoral commission report. A reminder that democratic rights under s 3 of the Charter are not subject to the notwithstanding clause. This is one instance where the UCP cannot try to avoid the courts.

Here's an ABlawg post from my colleague Shaun Fluker in which he questions the minority's gerrymandering report on electoral districts in Alberta. 1/

Where are the sanctions on the State of Israel?
Israel is a state that has no respect for international law unless it's convenient.
Canada must impose sanctions.

A classic example of a bit-by-bit project in which the individual bits may not trigger an assessment but taken together the cumulative effects will be significant. The "master plan" for Wonder Vally is massive; see Jody MacPherson's coverage

Even as he was dying Stephen Lewis stood up for justice and the belief in a better world. A model to us all.
Today in QP the Premier said she’s protecting teachers from violence in schools by removing the word welcoming. Because that is definitely the problem, not the overcrowded classrooms or lack if supports. They’re too welcoming. #ableg
Text message: Hi from United Conservative Caucus Were you aware government is building 160+ schools, funding 476 complexity teams, adding 3,000 teachers & 1,500 EAs? Yes/No Response: l am aware that the UCP is the most corrupt government this province has ever seen and in the next election if the choices are UCP and a dirty old shoelace someone found in the gutter, not only would I vote for the shoelace, I'd go out and doorknock to campaign for the Dirty Old Shoelace Party like my life depended on it.
Captures my sentiments about the #UCP

There is a long philosophical tradition of civil disobedience from many different sources including Thoreau, Ghandi & Peter Singer. Alberta UCP Bill 25 will make it unlawful to teach about social change through the disobedience of laws.

So ... English language arts, social studies and biology disappear from the core academic high school subjects?
So true. And in Alberta, this policing has led to young women refusing to confirm their "biological sex" as a precondition to playing sports. Which has led to - guess what? Decreased participation of girls in sport, completely undermining the purported objective of the UCP. #abpoli
Signed.
As the parent of a child with severe disabilities, this demonstrates how callous our provincial government are. I don’t care if you’re right or left - this is cruel. But then again we had to take them to Court for keeping only disabled kids at home during a strike:

Shoutout to “creative academics” everywhere. Some members of the SCC and other courts may say this with criticism, but academic writing is a key branch of the constitution’s living tree. As is the work of NGOs who provide critical context for these arguments
The LSA's axing of DEI initiatives reaches further than a single course, but the main casualty is "The Path," a Indigenous cultural competency program launched in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's calls to action. The UCP's legislated call to inaction prevails ... for now.

The same UCP gov't wasted $70-80 million on a single source contract for unusable Turkish Tylenol, and about $240 million deciding to open the Eastern Slopes of the Rockies to coal mining and then deciding to close them. Whether it's due to incompetence or corruption, why are seniors paying for it?
Apparently financially attacking Albertans with severe disabilities is not enough for our UCP government. Their new budget attacks seniors too, taking away dental and eye health coverage, increasing medication co-pays, clawing back employment income greater than minimum wage, etc.

The Rosebud River valley - spectacular corner of Alberta - refuge for bats, bank swallows, prairie falcons and golden eagles. And now, safe for the time-being! Photo Jason Headley
Good News for Monday! 🦇Looks like the courts are on the side of the Rosebud this time! The conservation group has won their appeal! This special valley deserves protection - it is no place for a racetrack. See the post by "Save the Rosebud" here

Six years ago today, the University of Calgary suspended all in-person lectures due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It was terrific to chat with Morgan Meade, a student editor at the Dalhousie Law Journal, about my Christie Symposium paper "Legal Responses to Work-Related Intimate Partner Violence in Canada: Troubling Privatization." Blog posts by @nigelb.bsky.social are always worth a read, especially when they involve my favourite river. Nigel concludes that the CRT modernization “disproportionately benefit[s] the US … at the expense of ecosystem values, Canadian priorities, and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.”
A thorough examination by colleague jenniferkoshan@bsky.social of recent cases involving provinces that preemptively invoked the Charter's notwithstanding clause, & the interesting legal arguments currently being made to keep our rights and freedoms effective.
Given the proliferation of data centre applicns in Alberta with associated generation it's good to see the AUC taking a hard line & simply closing the door on shoddy applications like that of Synapse for a data centre & 1400 MW of generation in Olds. Here's a para from the closure letter: #abpoli
The Supreme Court of Canada just released its pivotal Charter equality rights decision in Quebec (AG) v Kanyinda.
It was an honour to have co-represented FCJ Refugee Centre and the Madhu Varma Migrant Justice Centre in their intervention in this case. 1/
And the good news is that the SCC majority in Kanyinda undertook an intersectional analysis focused on women refugee claimants. Section 15 Charter wins continue to be reason for celebration given the ongoing uncertainties with the Court’s commitment to equality rights, and with governments’ too.
