Freeze ZX magazine, issue 3
Another great issue of Freeze-ZX magazine to enjoy in the sunshine. Thanks @freeze-zx.bsky.social !
It’s a Zed Pro II, or it will be when my new reel of solder arrives. I didn’t realise how low my current reel was until I started on that backplane.
“A lot” ;-)
Capacitors on a RC2014 backplane
It’s new #RC2014 day. Where better to start soldering than the capacitors on the backplane.
This time next week I’ll be sending FREEZE‑ZX Issue 03 to print — the long‑awaited next chapter is nearly here.
You can preorder your copy today from:
freeze64.com/freeze-zx-is...
Issue 02 sold out fast, so grab No.03 while you can.
#ZXSpectrum #Z80 #Speccy #SinclairSpectrum
I can’t see that listed on his website?
This is the sort of thing I’d pay someone to fix. I’m happy attempting most repairs to my Sinclair computers, but I think this is just too fiddly.
Exactly, it was just bit bashing.
I made a module for my Z80 based RC2014 computer and essentially lifted the code from the ZX81 or Spectrum ROM to get it working. There’s a slight difference between the two due to how the screen works from what I remember.

That’s when an interface like the Multiface comes in useful. You can use it to capture a screenshot for printing.
My ZX Printer needs a new belt. I see that there are modern replacements, but I don’t think my eyesight is up to the job of reattaching the styluses.
Lion-o with the Sword of Omens from Thundercats.
If you see this, drop a hero with a sword.
I still think the van should be called the Milton Hideout.
I've had this in my YouTube feed for the past few weeks. Cracking theme tune.
Mr fiddler!
That reminds me, when is the next issue of SAM Revival due out?
Who needs a fancy PlayStation or XBox when you can play Kill The Bit on your #RC2014 Orton 3C instead. All 28 bytes were toggled in by hand.
I was thinking along those lines. Taking some baby steps first just looking at the data bus.
I’ve been using a Raspberry Pi Pico 2 to spy on my #RC2014 Orton 3C’s data bus. At the moment this just displays the hex value it can currently see. This means I can make sure the values I’ve toggled in are correct without having to mentally convert from binary.
A ZX BASIC program to plot a heart shape to the screen.
A heart plotted on screen.
Happy Valentines Day! Here’s a little program for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum to plot a heart on screen.
This is the code I toggled in. It just calls some example code in ROM.
0000 0000 00 NOP
1100 0011 C3 JP $4150
0101 0000 50
0100 0001 41
Thanks. I have a blue box enclosure for it, but still making sure it's all working before fitting it. I think it's all OK as I can get it run my code.
My #RC2014 Orton 3C computer is up and running.
This is a really low level Z80 computer that you program using the switches on the front panel.
In this case, I’m calling a ROM routine that reads the switches on the left, displays them on the LEDs, then rotates them left.
@peteronion.bsky.social is it too early to ask if you are organising another RC2014 Assembly this year? I really enjoyed the one last year and I would love to attend again.
It's good to know it's not just me. What value resistor did you end up using?
Also, how is your expansion module coming along? I've not seen any videos about the hex pad for a while.
I did, and the optional programmer as well. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, but I'm hoping for some serendipity once it's all put together.
I held out for at least 3 months before ordering the kit. #willpower
Yes, the blue box for the case arrived from China yesterday.
Orton 3C panel running on an RC2014 Picasso computer
Testing out my #RC2014 Orton 3C Digital IO module on my #RC2014 Picasso.
The power light is blinding, so I may need to swap the resistor for a bigger value like the numbered LEDs.
Apart from that, it’s all looking good for both input and output.
No, but it did have rubber keys.
