Yugi goes through so much trauma in the manga that it basically awakened something inside of him with the aid of the Millenium Puzzle.

Goddamn I love this manga.

Yami acts completely different, with a different percieved voice, attitude, and sense of composure. Yugi blacks out and has memory holes of things happening when Yami is fronting.

Yami only ever takes over when Yugi is under intense stress, or threatened, or when there is a threat;l and has experienced a lot of traumatic events; making him a traumagenic system.

The OG Yu-Gu-Oh! manga is so dissociative identity disorder positive.
We never thought about this since there wasn't much evidence in the anime, but Yugi/Yami is such a good representation of DID.
