My dad abhors any negative comments about immigrants. Asked him recently why he’s so strong on it: ‘Because we’re always happy to take the rich and clever ones. Which means it’s not about disliking immigrants. It’s about disliking the poor and vulnerable. And that’s a bad human instinct.’

Polls are inherently noisy. A couple of points one way or another doesn't demonstrate much until it becomes a trend.

Here's the most recent census data from the ONS, showing Bradford residents' country of birth.

80.1% report their country of birth as England.

Labour losing Runcorn was avoidable and as much a result of our party’s failures as Reform’s rise.

Now, we need to learn the right lessons, not double down on the same mistakes.

Cutting disability benefits and scrapping the Winter Fuel Allowance made voters abandon us. [1/3]

⏰ Labour needs to wake up

🚨 If anything like these vote shares happened in a general election, the far right would win a landslide majority thanks to our broken voting system

A two-part object lesson in how performative authoritarianism done by the left is never enough for the right.

One reason conservatives beat centrists is that they look at polling and think "we have work to do" instead of "this is an immutable fact of reality that we are powerless to tackle."

On any number of issues they have moved the needle through sheer bloody-mindedness and media saturation.

Was literally just thinking about a thing I read thirty years ago which is still true. Pre-Thatcher and Reagan what tended to happen was a progressive party would get in and make radical social changes, and then a conservative party would get in...

Remember: Wealth can’t be separated from power. Power begets wealth and wealth begets power. We're seeing in real time how the extreme concentration of wealth is distorting our politics, rigging our markets, and granting unprecedented power to a handful of billionaires.

If I told you that the Bank of England upgraded its growth forecasts yesterday, would you believe me?

It did....

i HAvE nOt gOne CRazY - honest

This is a hill I am prepared to die on - the BoE and others (all central banks, IMF, OECD etc etc) report their "forecasts" in a terrible way

Just look at the mess she made of Britain | Polly Toynbee A whole slew of dramas and plays mark half a century since her election as Tory leader. But there is too much gloss, when so many people are still suffering Now she’s an opera. Yet another myth-making apotheosis lifts Margaret Thatcher to iconic realms,…

Agreed, Prodigy starts really badly but by midway through the first season, it's pretty great, and goes from strength to strength in season 2. Even without caring much about the VGR characters the first time around, they (and others) are really well used in Prodigy.

I've only got two-thirds through so far, but fun as it is, the editing makes it *frenetic* and makes the fastest-paced 20th century stories seem positively sedate. Can't help but think that an extra 15-20 minutes wouldn't have killed them.

This is sort of fascinating because if you were to turn on pretty much any talk radio station or pick up any tabloid, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was the inverse.
