Vitronic, the Germany-based company that makes these speed cameras, says on its website they have “optimum protections against potential vandalism.” One thing I noticed with this one on Bonifant Road is it lights up if you get close.
There are six large new mobile speed cameras called “enforcement trailers” that are turning heads in Montgomery County. This one is on Bonifant Road in Silver Spring.
This was the final eastbound street car ever. I guess it may also have been the first – and last – “express” streetcar, as they warned us it would only stop at the end of the line at Benning & Oklahoma Avenue.
This is the moment everyone got off near Union Station at the end of the line.
Just took the final westbound ride ever on the DC Streetcar. A big crowd came out to say goodbye. Service ends tonight after 10 years of streetcars running along H Street and Benning Road.
It’s probably time for the DC Streetcar to take this poster with “upcoming stations” down since they were never built and the entire streetcar system is closing within the next hour or so.
DDOT tells me the DC Streetcar averaged about 2000 riders a day, but it is getting way more than that today on its final day in operation. The final runs down Benning Road & H Street are scheduled for around 10 PM tonight.
At the time, only the Red Line existed and you could only ride between Rhode Island Ave. & Farragut North. There were only 5 stations on day one - Gallery Place didn’t open until December 1966 because its elevators weren’t finished & NoMa came many years later. #wmata
Metrorail turns 50 years old today! #wmata shared these pics from March 27, 1976 with me. You can see the line to get in the Rhode Island Ave Station. I talked to a man who actually rode that first day & remembers the lines being massive & everyone being so excited to ride.
This is the part of the Potomac Interceptor sewage line that broke in January. It’s fixed to the point sewage is again flowing. DC Water says they’ve done some initial rehabilitation work near here but still have a lot to do to restore the C&O Canal.
BREAKING: The FAA says it has temporarily stopped traffic at all three major local airports (BWI, DCA, Dulles) due to "a strong chemical smell at the Potomac TRACON that is impacting some air traffic controllers."
Southwest says it will end all service to and from Dulles Airport as of June 4. The company sent me a statement saying it's part of "ongoing efforts to refine its network." Southwest says it will continue to have a large presence at BWI and DCA.
Reagan National says the package was cleared by Arlington County Fire around 10:20. There are a number of delays, and not just at Concourse D. In addition to the incident, the weather here and elsewhere is certainly not ideal today so that is affecting flights also. #DCA
BREAKING: Concourse D is now back open at Reagan National Airport after it was evacuated earlier after the airport says a suspicious package was found in a break room. If you watch to the end of the video, you’ll see police coming out of the entrance to Concourse D.
A new report has reignited a debate on whether DC should consider “congestion pricing,” in which drivers would be charged a fee to take their cars into downtown Washington. wjla.com/news/local/w...
Despite decades of efforts to get them not to do it, millions of drivers each year still drive past stopped school buses. A DC area advocacy group & company are trying to change that. wjla.com/news/local/t...
Do you ride the Dulles Metro escalator with luggage? Metro doesn't want you to, and they've put up a "removable bollard" to try to discourage you from doing it. More details: #wmata #iad

DC Water CEO David Gadis is testifying at a DC hearing about the Potomac Interceptor sewage pipe collapse. Says the part that collapsed was last inspected in Oct 2024; they found a couple sections to keep an eye on but did not think there was an imminent threat of collapse.

Metro says the Half Street entrance to the Navy Yard station is now back open - it’d been closed since fall. 5 escalators were replaced including the long ones often packed with fans before & after Nationals games. #wmata knew it was vital to get this done before baseball season.
I was told until some opposition arose in the last few days, it was expected to pass easily, so this was a way to get it passed faster. Obviously now all the supporters wish it had just been a simple majority vote.
It’s not yet clear if they will, supporters say they are not giving up though
BREAKING: Even though a large majority of the US House supported it, the ROTOR Act - an aviation safety bill strongly supported by many family members of Flight 5342 victims - barely failed to reach the 2/3 majority required for a “suspension motion.” It did not pass.
Families of the victims of Flight 5342 and Northern Virginia Congressmen are talking about the ROTOR Act, an aviation safety bill the Senate passed unanimously last year & the House is expected to vote on this afternoon.
The Smithsonian American History Museum has a pair of gloves from the last time the USA men won gold in hockey, 1980. Pretty cool to see in light of yesterday’s win!
My coworker John sent me this video of riders waiting at Metro Center, Metro is reporting Red Line delays both directions due to a signal problem at Dupont Circle. #wmata
