Everyone is so busy in NYC that doing social stuff is very inconsistent. It creates this weird cycle where catching up on work for an hour on Saturday is more consistently fun (and less frustrating) than trying to meet new people.

about to post a Star Fox story to ao3 in the year of our lord 2026 (wtf)
don't get me wrong, it's not all negative, and I like hearing from friends even if it's topical slop, but if I step back and look at it all as a whole, I'm not so sure it's net-positive
and even when they don't partake, people's public social media feeds rarely embody whatever qualities of the 'private' relationship we have that made me interested in following them anyway -- The Algorithm transforms your behavior (and I am no exception here)
even when following people I like and get along with well, I'm bombarded by doomscrolling and doomposting and all the topical slop I'm specifically trying to avoid, because, well, that's just what social media does to you
