US is ‘using Mexico as a garbage sink’ leading to ‘toxic crisis’, UN expert says Marcos Orellana, a special rapporteur, found lax environmental standards and lack of oversight allowed pollution to accumulate

'We have learned to live sick', a mother says.
How US overconsumption is using Mexico as a garbage sink. The harrowing result: over 1,000+ 'sacrifice zones' where cancer and miscarriages have been normalized.

Refusing to accept big tech's AI-poisoned 'future of journalism' Humans, however flawed, are

New — I wrote about how journalists proudly using AI to help them write their stories obscures the deeply human process that makes journalism a societal necessity, and one that feeds the soul of those who create it.

Hope you’ll give it a read. I promise I wrote the whole thing.

Exposing a global ‘online rape academy’ that is teaching men how to abuse women and evade detection CNN exposes an online network of men encouraging each other to drug and assault their partners, and swap tips on how to get away with it.

The Pelicot case shone a spotlight on this: While the public attention moved elsewhere, this behavior did not disappear. In shocking group chats, @cnn.com reports now how men encourage one another to drug and assault their wives – and swap tips on getting away with it.

‘Reimagining matter’: Nobel laureate invents machine that harvests water from dry air Omar Yaghi’s invention uses ambient thermal energy and can generate up to 1,000 litres of clean water every day

“Water is coming.” As a child, Yaghi ran off with buckets and grew up in a refugee community in Jordan. He says that the hardships he endured there inspired him. Today, he is inventing a system that draws water from the air. What an admirable story!

Ghana’s incredible coffins: the true story the West got wrong. Hint, it has anti-colonial roots. Today, the largest collection of Ghanaian coffins is found not in Accra, but in Basel, Switzerland, at the Museum der Kulturen (Museum of Cultures).

The thing is: “remigration” is already happening. Far from the comments sections underneath pieces of writing like these, where people exchange anguished or angry words about the future of Germany and the country’s soul, people are already leaving. Foreigners out, cry the protesters, and in some sense they are getting their wish. Every few weeks, I go to check in on a friend or acquaintance and find that they are either in the process of packing their bags or they are gone, gone, gone. In general the white ones are staying in Europe and the non-white ones are putting an entire ocean between themselves and here. Germany’s problem isn’t the loud migrants like me. It’s the ones who right now are leaving silently, never to return.

Last week I checked in on a friend, someone who I thought would be one of the very last immigrants (who have any other options) to leave Germany, only to find that they and their family are already in the process of leaving. Their explicit reason: the rise of fascism. Very, very disturbing times.

Trump's policies trickle down. Sources told me that a $250,000 grant awarded by the U.S. Embassy for the renovation of the Alte Feste Museum, a national monument in the capital of #Namibia, has to be repaid by the Namibian government. Trump wants the money back.
