Scarlet Letters in Alabama’s Academia Written by SNAP member Amanda Finn.

Excellent piece by @snapcoalition.org member Amanda Finn explaining the toll and harm of anti-DEI policies in #academia, particularly on #ECRs and people of color.

Happy National Science Appreciation Day! 🤩
Ok look - #science has had a rough year 🫠 and maybe doesn’t feel like celebrating.
But Miles Arnett & @disha-patel3.bsky.social say that we must continue to celebrate regardless and continue fighting for #better.

The Lab Bench under Fascism Written by SNAP member Emma Scales

I'm curious what people think about this article I wrote a couple weeks ago for the @snapcoalition.org blog, especially given the news this week that Penn will be required to hand over a list of all Jewish students and faculty to the federal gov't... tinyurl.com/scifascism

Looks like #ScienceAdvocacy still matters for 2026
(jokes on you - it ALWAYS matters, but it’d be cool if the circumstances weren’t as dire 😖🫠)

The image is split into two sections. The left side features a quote on funding priorities by Sudip S. Parikh, AAAS CEO, with a small photo of the person below. The U.S. Capitol building is in the background. The right side shows a bar chart titled "Federal R&D FY26 + FY27 Appropriations in Billions." It compares requested and enacted funding amounts for NIH, NSF, DOE, and NASA in 2026 and 2027. Bars are color-coded to distinguish between 2026 requests, 2027 requests, and 2026 enacted law.

The U.S. administration released the FY 2027 Budget Request this morning, proposing deep cuts to science funding once again. While there are similarities in the proposed cuts between FY26 and FY27, the final FY26 appropriations show the impact of advocacy in action.

Inspired and amazed by the interesting and thought-provoking sessions at the AAAS Annual Meeting, the 40+ members of the @snapcoalition.bsky.social I had the honor to meet in person (finally!), and the ideas and conversations that took place.

Jordan and I hope you enjoy this AAAS reflection!

On February 25th, 20 graduate students from across Indiana attended the 7th Annual Indiana Science Communication Day at the Indiana Statehouse. Attendees presented posters or short talks, and attended a public session.

The event resulted in increased dialogue between early career researchers and policymakers in Indiana. It was so wonderful to be able to bring early career researchers to the policy making space, to see how policies are made, and to advocate for science and research.

So amazing to co-organize IN Sci Comm Day again for early career researchers in Indiana. It is so important to communicate about our research and how science and science-driven policies can impact our communities.

Simple math illustration on how vaccination reduces measles transmission

The MMR vaccine is 97% effective. Three kids are likely to get infected w/ limited spread of disease. Exposed non-vaccinated children will spread it faster w/ increased risk of complications.

FEDERATION of AMERICAN SCIENTISTS

Degraded Capacity Creates Larger
Competitiveness Risks

The challenge is compounded when we consider the degradation of our own technical capacity. In fields like nuclear fusion and radio astronomy, the United States simply does not have the laboratory capabilities that are necessary for our scientists to remain at the cutting edge. In 2023, the Fusion Energy Science Advisory Committee found that "rapid progress toward commercial fusion power will likely rely in part on research at existing or near-term international facilities that provide capabilities presently unavailable in the U.S., such as long-pulse magnetic confinement - an area where the PRC has invested billions of dollars in recent years. Decoupling and fear of information transfer also has Limited our ability to communicate with the PRC in areas like spaceflight safety, where we generate dozens of conjunction warnings every day involving potential near-misses with Chinese satellites. The consequences of non-communication or inefficient communication with PRC satellite operators resulting from a collision cascade includes the loss of access to particular orbits, significant damage to U.S. and allied commercial and security assets, and potentially unlimited liabilities for the United States under the Outer Space Treaty. Such a disaster would have dire consequences for our economy and space-dependent national security establishment.

In addition to the arguments made about research security, there are other issues associated with withdrawal from international interactions that inhibit American competitiveness. Some points here about the impact on emtech and spaceflight safety.
