Sydney winters have been the coldest I’ve ever been (some kind of mass hysteria pretending that Australia doesn’t get cold so no insulation, double glazing, central heating). Electric heated desk mat, and seat pad saved me. Extremely economical to run and you’re warm in with 2 minutes.

Is there a study on this you could point me to? This intuitively makes sense, but I’d not seen it confirmed before.

I had that thought, but surely more straightforward to inform school and get them to change number/email?

Very curious as to the use case that is in mind which necessitates this change of policy by Telstra (who aren't on BlueSky it seems). Anyone have any ideas?

One of the side effects of more friends (as opposed to work colleagues) adopting Signal is that I can no longer silence notifications when out of work hours. Still live in hope WhatsApp and Signal will at some point disaggregate from phone number such that worlds can be separated without two phones!

Am reminded too that ThropeGlen used to be Azure Solutions which used to be part of BT. Another thread I never managed to unravel. Congrats again @cr0ft0n.bsky.social. www.linkedin.com/company/thor...

Also... obviously this is a well documented issue, but it's just insane how much of the web just vanishes.

The @lrb.co.uk article has disappeared, www.lrb.co.uk/v30/n16/soar... and doesn't seem to be on the @waybackmachine.bsky.social. Bruce Schneier's blog has an except from a CNet piece (also offline) quoting the LRB piece. www.schneier.com/blog/archive...

A blast from the past reading @cr0ft0n.bsky.social's expose of location tracking companies, assisted by UK companies. The list includes ThorpeGlen who (I think?) were the first company that piqued my interest in the issue, that I came across in the @lrb.co.uk.

As Alex Lawrence-Archer says in the article: @awo.agency “have supported actors to make these data access requests, trying to learn more. I personally know of actors who have been paid off by AI companies in order to withdraw those requests.

I have similar issue for EE width shoes. You’re lucky if a brand offers more than one wide shoe option any more, even in specialized areas like running. I assume either minimum order quantities being too high or average unit costs not providing the margin they want means it’s easier not to bother.

It’s an interesting thought!

I talked broadly about this with @kaifulee.bsky.social recently not in relation to OpenAI et al doing national specific system prompt but in relation to building national modals with some additional national specific language/culture/values on top of existing open source models.

Every story involving AI screw ups is going to have these inception style levels within levels from now on isn’t it. 🤦‍♂️

My curiosity stems not from his UK effort but because it has occurred to me that many people care more about the planet than they do privacy, and that perhaps some people would be more up for taking a privacy preserving approach (with less data) if they could also tie it to reduced carbon.

I am interested in this though. I appreciate individualizing action pushes burden away from structural changes which is bad. And the act of deleting would use more power/water than leaving be if you compare 1h; but over… 10 years is that still right?

If you’ve not taken plunge to pay for Kagi yet, it’s worth it IMO. Only thing it’s not good for is shopping whereby annoyingly the all seeing Google eye does seem to have me dialed despite efforts to resist.

Great that HMG are taking this approach. Really encouraging.

This depressing story seems to indicate a need for cultural change within MI5. IPCO (which was itself misled) will no doubt comment in the report ordered by the Court. Two points made in the judgment show why this is indeed quite serious: /1

But it’s an op-ed? And for me reading it exposes the weakness of the argument made by the author? 🤷
