Students aren't the ones robbing us blind. Tech execs who got rich on the backs of Canadians and then don't pay their taxes are. Maybe if they did, Canada would have the opportunities that make students want to stay.

@lapresse.ca #StatsCan concentré sur les 20 % les plus riches ne commence pas à démontrer la grave inégalité des richesses au Canada. En fait, le 0.5 % détient plus de 20 % de la richesse nationale.

#CBCNews #StatsCanada focusing on the top 20% doesn't begin to scratch the surface of how bad wealth inequality is in Canada. In fact the 0.5% hold over 20% of the national net wealth.

“The super-rich excel not only at making money, but at avoiding and evading taxes.”
In their latest article @us.theguardian.com highlighted that from 2000-2024, the 1% captured 41% of all new wealth. Meanwhile the bottom half of humanity got just 1%

@torontostar-rss.bsky.social asks who should Mark Carney be raising taxes on? Big Oil.
Canada’s oil producers are seeing $90 billion in windfall profit, and these excess earnings should be taxed to prevent profiteering and benefit the Canadian public

Patriotic Millionaires Canada Board Member, Emma Davis, is in @policyalternatives.ca's latest edition of The Monitor “Money Stories”. She spoke to wealth inequality in Canada, her membership with Patriotic Millionaires, and what it means to be a part of the 0.1% in Canada.
The CRA is cutting jobs while we are losing tens of billions of dollars to tax non-compliance. The Hill Times reports that the CRA is looking to cut costs by relying on inaccurate AI at the expense of Canadian workers.
Our recent poll of Canadian millionaires found 61% would support a wealth tax on multi-millionaires and billionaires
Every day Canadians and millionaires alike both know:
It's time for a wealth tax.
@c4tf.bsky.social and @bcpolicy.bsky.social found that, in 2023, 86 billionaire families held as much wealth as Canada’s 6.2 million least wealthy families.
The big question for @dylandusseault.bsky.social is how to fix it?

A new report found 86 billionaire families hold as much wealth as Canada’s 6.2 million poorest families. We speak with @dylandusseault.bsky.social on why some of Canada's richest say they should be taxed more and @jimbostanford.bsky.social breaks down tax loopholes driving the gap lnk.to/bigstory

Our Executive Director @dylandusseault.bsky.social joined @thebigstory.bsky.social to talk about the growth of wealth inequality in Canada, why it's dangerous, how the tax code fuels it, and how we can fix it.

Profits have soared, and taxes have plunged.
The shortcomings in our tax code are rocket fuel for extreme wealth inequality.

"When we zero in further on the 1,685 families that make up the wealthiest 0.01 per cent, they now have an average of $448.5 million in wealth, over 4,000 times the wealth held by an average family in the bottom 50 per cent of the wealth distribution"

“If we’re concerned about democracy, about our sovereignty, we can’t just be worried about foreign threats — we also need to think about the concentration of wealth and power at home.”
www.policyalternatives.ca/news-researc... 'If we consider the top 1% as the “treeline” on a mountain, then the real story of the phenomenal wealth growth in the last few decades has taken place almost completely above the treeline' @policyalternatives.ca @lindamcquaig.bsky.social
A statistical rounding error of the Canadian population — the wealthiest 0.01% families — hold an average of $448.5 million.
That’s 4,041x the average wealth of a family in the bottom 50% in 2023.
Rounding error as ruler? No thanks 👎

If we aren't tackling growing economic inequality, our economy will continue to undeperform.
Growth vs. equality is a false choice. It is framing that is inconsistent with the evidence.

Automatic tax filing is long-overdue. Yet tax filing giants have been investing in major lobbying efforts to block it. It would put billions in unpaid benefits in the hands of low-income Canadians and greatly improve accessibility. We need our government to make this happen, once and for all.
PM Carney once wrote: “More equal societies are more resilient, they are more likely to invest for the many, not for the few, and to have robust political institutions and consistent policies."
If he still believes that, his tax code should reflect it.
thetyee.ca/Analysis/202...
This is just as relevant to Canada as the US:
Too much wealth flows to the top.
That wealth concentration is never taxed.
The economy becomes overly reliant on the spending of a narrow set of households.
We have to tax wealth for economic stability.

Very good statement on the ways that extreme wealth/power concentration breeds depravity.

canadawestforum.org/2026/02/04/f...
Our current tax code guarantees that the chasm between the uber rich and every one else will just keep growing (and keep growing faster).
When wealth and power get to top heavy, societies tend to collapse.
Effective taxes on extreme wealth are how we defend our economy and democracy.

Our friends @c4tf.bsky.social have a new report examining the true levels of wealth inequality in Canada, and it's impact on our democracy.
One shocking stat: billionaire wealth grew 37.2% between 2023 and 2025 while total household wealth only grew 9.3%.
