A trio of ginkgo trees, noticed by Ana (@ana___g on IG). A reminder of how our designs shape the more-than-human world.

“The middle one turns golden first because it’s not blocked by buildings. I had to stop and rub my eyes a bit.”

“A bonus photo.” While chasing sunset, Terese (@extinctpoet on instagram) spotted flowers glowing in the last light — an unexpected moment she calls Illuminations.

From moss to rubbish, symmetry to sunsets — we asked 100 people what they find beautiful, and their answers remind us how much beauty hides in plain sight.

What about you? What’s something ordinary you find beautiful?

The big arcs in the sky are rare, but smaller ones show up in the most unexpected places — if we pause to notice them.

Once you’ve seen one, you’ll start seeing more (the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon at play).

Tag us with your noticings — we’d love to share them.

A quiet corner in Bruges. Kerry (@kezadamsz on IG), drawn to the stillness, noticed how the lines of the railings, benches and cobblestones guide the eye into the scene.

Just Looking is about noticing what we might otherwise overlook. Tag @wearejustlooking to share your noticings.

What happens to a city when we stop noticing it?

In The Phantom Tollbooth, a whole city fades because its people are too busy to look.

We asked our community: what details of your city would you miss if they disappeared?

Here’s what they shared with us!

On our last photowalk in Abney Park we noticed light through the trees, leaves on the ground, and strangers becoming companions. Our walks are about slowing down and seeing what we might usually miss. Keep an eye out for the next one—everyone’s welcome.

Unplanned beauty. ✨ Thanks to Yasumi (@super_ordinarylife on IG) for noticing what’s often seen as rubbish: “Twigs, leaves, flowers still loud with colour. Petals holding their shape like they don’t know they’ve been discarded.” @wearejustlooking.org

A silhouetted bird stands in a puddle on a dirt path at dusk, its reflection visible in the water. The background is softly blurred with hints of greenery and a golden sky

Sometimes taking a different way home shows you a whole new world.

Thanks to Lamby on Instagram (@lambadrian) for sharing this Koot bird moment. On tough days, he and his son walk new routes “to see what we can spot.” This was one of them. 👀

The Slipperiness of Convenience Knowing what we are doing – while actually doing it – is the basis of awareness, intention and agency. And sometimes that requires adding some annoying speed bumps along the way.

Leftover bits of apple looking like a smiley face!

As we say here, looking is love. After enjoying this apple, these leftovers were noticed by Erin Bradly from New Zealand – a self-confessed lover of crisp apples. 🍎 For the good looker, even a throwaway moment like this one can feel alive!

Slow down and stay curious out there, people! 👀

blurry yellow leaves - intentionally blurred, almost like a painting

We often look for focus and clarity in photography and in life. So much so that our technology does it automatically for us. Here, Susan Bourgerie https://buff.ly/4iztOjm uses intentional camera movement to do the very opposite, creating a beautiful blur, and leaving something to the imagination. 👀

Stopping to Notice with Miranda Keeling [Listen: 5 min]
Many of you may have Miranda's book The Year I Stopped to Notice. If not, it's such a lovely one to read and to gift. But did you know she also has a podcast? One that has won awards and is wonderful, and you can listen to it here. This link takes you to a special 200th episode in which listeners sent in their own observations.
