You sound just like Doc Brown talking to his wife about what to name their kids.
Session Zero has very little to do with the system & everything to do with the people, but Session Zero is for things like topics to be avoided, consent & tone or regarding making characters. Elements like that. It has nothing to do with how easy a game is to play or how difficult it is to setup.

A different river to different people.
I haven't used the fey a lot, however in one campaign there was an Eladrin in the party & the game ended up going to their home which was under threat from trolls. The party saved the fey so they were all really appreciative, albeit playfully.
For most systems other than D&D its never an issue because the systems themselves change the focus from character to character often, but in D&D I simply don't spend a lot of time in towns where such behaviour generally manifests.
Created this character for @tabcreations.com
I wanted to give her a powerful, commanding presence with a touch of mystery someone who looks like she’s seen everything and still stands unshaken.

Just gentle foreshadowing. Allowing the higher insight among the group to notice some regret in their eyes, or them being spotted whispering to themselves in a corner. Stuff like that. If its something more complicated like a Slaad shapeshifter, then I'll get them to get details wrong in stories.
All packed and ready to run Draw Steel at Conquest 2026!

@alphastream.bsky.social pulling out all the stops for us tonight!
listen i get that scheduling is the bbeg whenever you're trying to get a group of adults together on a regular basis but i really just need the universe to let me have like a couple solid weeks where my plans arent changed and i dont have to cover my entire fucking calendar in whiteout
Curse of Strahd does this constantly. Tavern missed its wine shipment? Its because of these Strahd-worshipping Druids. Crazy Abbot on the hill? He's trying to build a bride for Strahd. Evil witch that lives in the swamp? Strahd's nanny.
There is a reason this is many people's favourite.
This distinction is precisely why I used, "stream" in my example, because watching through a paid subscription service would still end up sending residuals to the people involved. Physical media however can be viewed long after purchasing without the need for any of this philosophy.
A good example of this might be someone objecting to wanting to spend money that ends up in Kevin Spacey's hands, but loving Edgar Wright. Because Spacey is only in a supporting role in Baby Driver that movie might get the all clear. Depends person to person, artwork to artwork of course.
Of course. I was thinking more of your comment of, "If you buy it and the artist gets paid, you haven't separated shit." Good to hear about the Weinstein company. I can enjoy that movie in peace. lol.
I once had 2 level 11 characters escorting a team of 3 level 1s. A Frost Giant had attacked a town & goblins had run in to loot the damaged homes. The level 11 characters ran towards the Giant, the level 1s dealt with the Goblins. It was pretty awesome as it established those 2 as legendary heroes.
A Lightning Bolt deals average of 28 damage which might take down an already wounded level 6 character, but it'd instantly kill a level 1. That's where the real divide takes place & I leave it up to the players to assess that danger & fight with that in mind. Has worked every time so far.
At least with 5e & its "Bounded Accuracy" means a level 1 still has a decent chance to hit compared to a level 6. They get 1 less attack, but do comparable damage.
+5 to hit
1d8+3 damage
vs
+7 to hit
1d8+4 damage
twice
The divide is not that great. The BIG difference is in maximum HP.
My players are very on it. They position tactically, manage healing resources appropriately, Help action, etc. A level 1 Cleric's Healing Word gets an ally up as effectively as a level 20's (minus 2 for Wisdom differences).
A level 1 helped fight a Lich once & they hit level 4 immediately.
You've got me thinking about this & collaborative works. Inglorious Basterds would give money to Harvey Weinstein, but also to the actors/crew that worked on it (at least the ones that get residuals). Can one stream the movie to support artists you like or does the bad apple spoil the barrel?
I'm a "Long Term Continuity" DM. When all else is stripped away, regardless of group this is something I have always stuck to. The impacts of PCs in games I ran 10 years ago are still felt in games I'm running this week.
I also tend to consistently feature Time Travel, at least in my D&D games.
When I run D&D I run with experience, so a new character would start at level 1 but would very quickly advance to be 1 or 2 levels below the team due to the way XP scales. Can help give real stakes to death & importance on being able to Revive allies & components needed to do so.
I use both, depending on the circumstance. The .PDF is super helpful when you want to be able to text search a specific word for rules clarification or other related reference, but the physical book is so much more useful at the actual table. Also, the gorgeous art just hits different in a book.
