If you will be seeing any 4- to 6-year-olds today, please show them what you use to start your car and ask them what it is, then tell me the result.

This is an actual market research question. Appreciate any help!

Not knowing what this person was referring to, Deb looked me up and said to that committee member "He's not the problem. The Georgia school district was the problem."

Image is slides from the talk I gave yesterday, which was about pushing back against intolerance.

I spoke at a conference this week. One of my hosts, Deb, confessed that when my name had come up as a possible speaker, someone on the committee said "He might be a problem."

two passports: one invalidated, one emergency

First they would not let me enter the country. Then they wouldn't let me leave.

A cautionary tale about the disastrous ripple effect of traveling to speak at international schools without the right kind of blank pages in your passport:

One of the states in which my school visits have been censored because I say "gay" is Texas.

An educator with a 4th grader reading a letter from an author.

A fourth grader sent some valid requests to an author who doesn’t exist, and I had the privilege of writing her back.

What do donuts and boogers have to do with it?

A Tennessee librarian wanted to book me to speak but ultimately couldn't because [direct quotation] "the school board and others in the community do not see you in layers. No subtlety. They see all authors except Christian authors as evil."

3/3 So to get the best shot I could from the street, in 28°, I wedged myself between shrubs, then hoisted myself at an awkward angle with one foot on a chain-link fence and the other on a low, broken branch.

For that level of commitment, I think I deserve a Scooby Snack.

2/3 In October, the owner of this private property—Seaview Terrace in Newport, RI—had kindly given me advanced permission to come on to the grounds to take a photo. But just before my trip last week, she reneged.

In our interview, I’d asked Edward how he’d like to be remembered.

“As a maker of imaginary worlds with real characters in them.”

They say never meet your heroes.

Exceptions exist.

It was one of the most moving moments I’ve observed in my career.

On top of that, he and his wife Joan [who died last year] then invited me to a lovely dinner.

Edward is the Phoenix: surprise for an author Award-winning children's book author who speaks in schools and keynotes conferences worldwide.

In 2011, I found and interviewed the elusive, humble Edward, learning he’d never DONE an interview…or a book signing…or a school visit.

He’d never met his fans.

So later that year, I surprised him—and, at the same time, a room full of his fans: www.noblemania.com/2011/12/edwa....

Less than a month shy of age 100, Edward Ormondroyd died.

His debut book “David and the Phoenix” [1957] was a childhood favorite of mine and now a cult classic. He wrote about a dozen more before hanging up his typewriter in the mid-1980s.

At a time when it can feel like the better angels of our natures have left the building, I find it even more powerful to look to superhero stories.

They spotlight people who put others first…not for pay or praise, but because people matter most.

Not that it was easy. Or quick.

But aside from my family, it was the most exhilarating effort I’ve undertaken.
