Tinsel the calico cat looks goofily at the camera with her tongue sticking out
In *this* household we’re celebrating Tinsel’s 4th anniversary.
I fostered Tinsel when she was a bag of bones. She was visibly old, stinky, & nobody wanted her. I figured given how rickety she was, she’d be alive < a year, so I just adopted her. Here she is 4 years later, no longer stinky & plump.
A reminder. Modern work culture relies upon people being constantly anxious. With time, most start recognizing their agitated state as the new normal.
this confirms something i have long suspected, which is that certain people are told that their professional and academic failures are because of “affirmative action” or “DEI” as a way to avoid difficult conversations about their mediocrity www.wsj.com/lifestyle/ca...
Be the person your cat thinks you are.
Have been on Bluesky quite a bit the last two days (for info & resources) & it’s not social media that’s broken. I think it’s us that’s broken now. I’ll post about places ppl can donate because LA is in bad shape & my replies are full of “ummmm sounds like somebody’s never heard of Pompeii.”
Too many people think their political activism starts and ends at the ballot box
as LA is burning, a swath of the country is recovering from an ice storm, Alabama is preparing for up to 6” of snow and I’m praying for the TX power grid, a reminder:
we don’t need climate action just for future generations, we need it now.
the climate crisis is here, all around us
The comic that got us demonetised on Facebook back in August. (We’re no longer on Facebook).
Keith Wasserman: Does anyone have access to private firefighters to protect our home in Pacific Palisades? Need to act fast here. All neighbors houses burning. Will pay any amount. Thank you.
“Will pay any amount.”
Feels like one of those futile pleas we’re going to hear from wealthy people more and more in the era of climate change.
It’s ok to feel sick over the state of things.
The U.S. government already knows how to be ruthless. Never forget that.
This photo of a man on a mountain of bison skulls has circulated for years. Biologist Victor Scheffer said it best: “Nature needs millions of years to create a species; man needs only a few dozen to destroy one.”
If you were looking for a sign, here it is!
So. 2025, huh.
As a cat I'm considering just sleeping through it and seeing what 2026 brings
America's richest 10% now hold 60% of the nation's wealth.
The bottom half of America? It holds just 6%.
Wealth inequality is eating this country alive.
Black and white photo of a very fluffy longhaired grey kitten, sitting up looking so perfectly chonky and friendly. The name Topsey is written beneath the photo, and “Copyright 1907 by H.I. Robbins”. A bow has been painted onto the image to make appear as if Topsey is wearing a ribbon that ties in front.
KNEEL BEFORE TOPSEY. Postcard from my collection, 1907.
so if I'm understanding the tech-bro position correctly, it's this
if you made art this year, you did well. a sketch, even if it was scrapped ; a poem, even if it was deleted — mattered. you put thought to paper, you engaged with the creative alchemy of turning feeling to something tangible. doesn't matter if you weren't productive "enough." or good "enough."
“Haha can you believe McDonalds is doing a Squid Game promo” easily yes because capital subsumes all critiques of itself and no popular TV show or piece of art will ever threaten or unsettle it
A white background with gray text at the top that says “A Thought for Today:” in all caps followed by text in black “One does not ask of one who suffers: What is your country and what is your religion? One merely says: You suffer, that is enough for me. - Louis Pasteur, chemist and bacteriologist (27 Dec 1822-1895)”
I have always loved public libraries, but having young children has exponentially increased my gratitude and sense of indebtedness to them. Our local library is such a huge part of our lives. The books, the programming, the very intentionally curated kids’ section. It’s all such a gift.
