Labour seems keen to talk about the ‘Danish model’ and has taken inspiration from the ‘Social Democratic playbook’ for some of their recent policies.
So, I thought it would be worth looking across the pond to some of the lessons that Labour could take from the Danish election last week👇

Epinion did a poll on how Danes view the US (end of Jan 2026):
60% of the population (!!) see the US as an adversary, and only 17% answered that they thought the US was an ally

I don't think I have ever seen Berlingske translate their articles from Danish to English before (or remove the paywall..)
Tells you something about the moment we are in and the deep mistrust and anger the Danes are now feeling towards the US

What's the government hoping to get out of Starmer's visit to China?
My colleague Laura Chappell argues that it is not about securing a big announcement, but instead it is about:
1️⃣Scoping out economic opportunities
2️⃣Thawing diplomatic ties
3️⃣Getting Starmer to fully focus on China

The UK and its European allies have taken the right position and shouldn’t back down. Trump’s actions show a disregard for other countries’ territorial integrity, crossing a dangerous line. Hopefully Starmer’s speech this morning will make that clear. This is a moment to be sober but firm.
As #Trump ratchets up the tension over #Greeland here's some great insight from @sofiepultz.bsky.social about why the locals don't want control from Denmark - and won't want it from the US either.

🧺 Putting all our green energy eggs in one basket is risky. From batteries to critical minerals, more resilient supply chains matter for protecting UK jobs, energy security and net zero aims.

Key cross-cutting consideration to increase resilience in clean energy supply chains: the UK should established international partnerships with selected countries – including China, with clear security guardrails – on a supply chain by supply chain basis.
Assessment of the UK’s resilience in critical minerals and suggested policy action:
Assessment of the UK’s resilience in steelmaking and suggested policy action:
Assessment of the UK’s resilience in the solar PV supply chain and suggested policy action:
Assessment of the UK’s resilience in the battery supply chain and suggested policy action:
“Impact of disruption” entails extent to which the UK’s economic or policy priorities are adversely impacted in the event of a supply chain shock.
This is assessed quantitively through estimates of ‘dependency ratios’ and qualitatively through factors identified in the table:
“Risk of disruption” refers to the extent to which the supply chain could experience shocks.
We analyse the following risk factors:
It analyses the risk and estimates the impact of disruptions for the UK in:
- batteries
- solar PV
- steel
- critical minerals
For each of them, it suggests a set of policy actions that the UK government could implement to achieve higher levels of supply chain resilience.
The report calls on the UK government to strengthen the resilience of strategic clean energy supply chains through a comprehensive new policy approach that combines domestic measures with international initiatives.

In 1951 #Denmark set up a defence agreement allowing the #US unlimited military bases in #Greenland - so what's REALLY going on?

Official confirmation of German participation in European troop deployment to Greenland. First Bundeswehr soldiers to arrive tomorrow. 🇪🇺 / NATO solidarity in action.
What will this all mean? TBC..
We don’t know any of the details of the commission yet.
But it gives us hope. There will be another attempt at diplomacy.
Maybe we can tire them out? Wait for them to get distracted? For midterms to come around?
- DK once again reinforced that the Kingdom of Denmark has been one of the most loyal longstanding allies of the US, and that we deserve to be treated with respect
- DK/GN made it clear to Vance and Rubio that it’s counterproductive to discuss this via social media. Let’s do it behind closed doors
GN/DK/US to do high-level commission on Greenland
The Danes have hit the US with our secret weapon: drown them in bureaucracy and yet another commission where we will discuss the same thing over and over, only for it to drag out endlessly
Maybe the perfect way to deal with Trump??
- DK/GN share long term US security concerns and will continue to address them through NATO. Military personnel from several European countries on their way to Greenland today.
DK/GN also ask of US that they step up their own engagement in the Arctic.

Press conference just finished following DK/GN visit to White House.
Key takeaways:
- high-level commission will discuss ways forward, trying to reach an agreement over the next months
- “we agree to disagree”: US still wants Greenland, DK/GN say it’s a red line
