Winnipeg startup bets on AI to revive shrinking local news Boring News has chosen a name that invites a smirk, and the site leans into it. Its tagline is “AI-assisted local news. Mostly right. Always boring.” Behind that wink is

Interestingly, this glowing story about Boring News fails to mention the fact that the Winnipeg Sun was publishing the aforementioned AI-generated news slop on its own site earlier this year 🧐

Fatal police shooting and subsequent IIU investigation leave trail of troubling questions in wake of teen’s death in Portage la Prairie After two years, Tara and Kaylan still cannot comprehend how their mild-mannered homebody son, who didn’t cause them any problems or get into trouble at school, who’d never interacted with the police ...

And the second, about the death of Conor Rae, an 18-year-old who was shot and killed by an RCMP officer in Portage la Prairie in May 2023, in an encounter that has left many still unanswered questions for his friends and family.

Indian Act's ‘second-generation cut-off’ poses an existential threat to treaty people in Canada Thanks to the Indian Act’s ‘second-generation cut-off,’ First Nations people face a baffling and offensive equation when it comes to their status rights.

Proud this morning to see two of my stories from last year recognized with National Newspaper Award nominations.

The first, about the second-generation cut-off, which has been referred to as a genocide “in paper form” for First Nations people.

So in major pain and pissing pure blood, I called my surgeon’s answering service at 2am. Thirty minutes later one of my surgeon’s residents found me in the waiting room and got me into a room right away. I shouldn’t have had to do that. 🤦‍♂️
Our healthcare is “free”, but it’s far from good.

4 days after having a kidney removed due to cancer, I went to St B because my urine was the colour of cola.
I was told there would be an 18 hour wait! They only decided to take a urine sample after I raised hell. Then I was told that I wasn’t in danger of dying so I had to keep waiting.

Work is being done on that, I assure you. Keep watching this space. Last night wasn’t about getting into the nuance. It was about reporting on the town hall, and what residents and business owners who, mostly, vehemently oppose the idea in their neighbourhood.

I appreciate the suggestion. The story was a report on the town hall, and not a delve into the benefits of a safe consumption site. While people seem to want to help, the context here is they’re already in an impoverished are plagued by crime and drug use. They see SCS as bringing more.

Few public figures have faced a year as punishing as Pierre Poilievre has in 2025. He started with a 25-point poll lead, only to suffer a dramatic election loss—along with his own seat. Since then, he has watched Liberals near a majority as his MPs abandon him.

He was charged in March, as the article states. Released with a slew of conditions, which he breached, as the article says. The community wasn’t alerted, as our previous reporting said, because he essentially didn’t qualify for it. Dakota said police never told them. Police dispute that.
