This is a heartwarming story. I passed through Brindisi as a college student at that time and remember that there were a LOT of Albanians at the train station. I didn’t know about the grassroots humanitarian response of the city, great leadership and generosity.

I was studying at Miami U (oh) back then, which had a fair number of Soviet studies faculty. They rebranded overnight into Russia experts after it all came down.
The passing of Paul Newman (2008), Sean Connery (2020), Sidney Poitier (2022), and now Robert Redford (2025) signals the slow disappearance of a certain type of 20th century figure: men who embodied classic style in a way that reflected their taste, rather than a professional stylist.

Love it. We are downsizing and I’m giving most of my tools to my daughter who picked up carpentry building theater sets in college.
In middle school I wrote a paper about Hubble that earned me a trip to Huntsville to visit the Space Center. This was years before it finally launched. I’ve always been fond of that space telescope!
I walk a lot and often get asked for directions. Maybe comes from being accessible? My fave was a Parisian asking me for directions in Paris and her being a bit mortified when she realized I wasn’t a local.
