Cannes’ Annecy Animation Showcase 2026: The viral Japanese stop-motion project 'Hidari' leads this year's slate. A stylized and incredibly-shot revenge tale set in Edo-era reconstruction that raised over $100,000 with its 2023 Kickstarter. Full lineup details: www.cartoonbrew.com/markets/cann...

The effect is often more "wow, that must have been a lot of work to animate" and less this is a real creature or person with weight and muscles and inner life.

I think maybe you can make an argument it's not tactically that deep or skill-based, but it works perfectly as a break from the platforming and just flows SO well.

Don't know if it's the same thing you mean but I've noticed a lot of creature & character animation in both games and film has over-detailed movement just to show off how technically complex it is, makes it feel like everything is made of jelly. It's impressive but not naturalistic. No restraint.

This is also true of ALL Assassin's Creed games, Red Deads, and pretty much any big open world that drowns the screen in icons. Improve your experience 100% by turning all that nonsense off immediately and only checking a map occasionally. Explore on your terms, navigate by landmarks. See the world.

Currently belatedly playing Horizon Forbidden West and I both like it and find it frustrating. My hot take about games is that you shouldn't need to turn off half the interface/HUD to have a good (non-patronizing) experience in an open world game. And player characters should talk less. #gamedev

How would they know though? I definitely tried to emulate what little I could glean of pro dev practices back when I was doing modding and such. Back then there was barely any information, now there's too much to parse. Hard to know where to start.

I don't know, I think most modders aspire to be professional gamedevs. Maybe they shouldn't given the state of things, but it is what it is... The alternative to "momentum" is quietly fading out and never completing, which is what happens to most volunteer projects. Seen plenty of that.

The bosses were upset he took "time off" for a WEEKEND trip??? They demanded a phone number and called him 20 times?! Not the point of the story, but holy shit. No one should put up with such treatment.

Sierra games had such great art direction. Even when you go back to the big pixel early King's Quests 1-3 they do *so much* with so little in the environment art. King's Quest 7 is also an underappreciated favourite. Lovely Disney-esque style.

Cleopatra was a complicated figure in real life history and in the game. Much maligned (mostly by Roman propaganda), but clearly a canny and resourceful leader. Also the only one of the Greek Ptolemy family to adopt Egyptian culture and learn the language.

Maybe games that give you the solution to puzzles before you've even had the chance to realize there is a puzzle (or tell you what to do while you're literally already in the process of solving it) should just not have puzzles... If there's no space for challenge, why even bother with the busywork?

Yes, a lot of AAA games now feel like they've been playtested to death, all friction removed until there is no resistance at all and you just glide through it experiencing a flood of 'content'. Afraid to let the player get stuck or think for themselves even for a second. It's a real shame.

Unpopular opinion, but a lot of this "doing it right" mentality is how we wind up with games all feeling the exact same.

Difficulty spikes, weird controls, ropey onboarding all of it critical to prevent games feeling like they're ground down and pumped out safe mush.

If you haven't switched to Linux, the best time was few months ago and the second best time is now.

Spoilter alert: we're not abandoning Windows. Windows in a VM under Linux will work faster than on bare metal. Check out my video to learn more!

I'm still only at the exploring stage but haven't tried any non-Linux tools with it. What 3D stuff did you try? Maybe possible to get it working with WINE emulation? Else perhaps a dual-boot.

Anyone who is about to complete, or already has completed, an age-verification or identity-verification process online should read this short article.

the worst thing for me is. Imagine you lost a bunch of expert carpenters and you had to learn carpentry from scratch with no teachers, no youtube. That’s what the industry is currently doing. just getting rid of the folks who know the craft, and retaining the folks who know how to parasite
