This Game Design Trick Changes Everything
This Game Design Trick Changes Everything YouTube video by Studio Kunic

Stats. Classes. Quests.

Modern game design owes a lot to tabletop games. So why did we stop borrowing from them?

I went to PAX Unplugged to ask board game designers what video devs can learn today.

Apparently next episode is what James Gunn pitched the entirety of the DCU on. Gonna be nuts.

Still using ChatGPT for translation testing, but the color coding system I wrote pulls in from the translation key, making it work out of the box with localization.

The equipment panel still needs a lot of work, and I basically stole the stats from Megabonk as placeholders, but I think the UI is really starting to come together now. Everything supports localization and button hints automatically update based on input type. A lot of work but the QoL is worth it.

I spent this week switching to a tile-based character controller, along with heavily expanding my least-favorite part of game development: the user interface 😅

After 17 Years with Unity, I've Switched to This Engine
After 17 Years with Unity, I've Switched to This Engine YouTube video by Studio Kunic

I keep getting asked which game engine actually makes the most sense right now, so I turned my answer into a tier list. Gotta admit, it felt very cathartic to talk about one engine in particular engine 😈

Oh, ignore the translation for Japanese in the game, it's just Google translate to help me test 🤣

Of all the engines I’ve used, Godot’s localization is easily the best. I think you can truly get by without writing a single-line of code thanks its 'Remap' feature allowing you to switch out fonts, images, etc depending on localization. It's freaking magic.

Thanks <3 I've only been working on this project (well, on the godot-side at least) for a little under 2 weeks now. Haven't gotten around to sound just yet, but I can't wait!

For anyone that has watched my game dev videos, yes I am finally working on the full Lairkeeper game! Though the name is something I'm considering changing, I've got a pretty solid idea of where I want to take the game. But in one sentence, it's Dungeon Keeper meets Vampire Survivors.

The Best Game Ideas Are Stolen (And That's Okay)
The Best Game Ideas Are Stolen (And That's Okay) YouTube video by Studio Kunic

Everyone chases originality in game design, but the fact is, everything’s stolen. So how do we still have original ideas like Balatro and Lethal Company releasing? I try and tackle that conundrum in this video: youtu.be/9xgP8wkYNEs

Get Lost's auto-localization is complete! 🦾📝

Levels added to the game are automatically translated to 17 different regions. This means that stories from different cultures can be shared around the world 📢 🌎

So what is game localization? [1/7] 🧵

There are a variety of level modifiers now for the tracks in my procedural racing game

🔁 - Adds multiple laps
↗️ - Doubles the distance
💀 - Boss node that significantly increases difficulty and unlocks the next section

How Limitations Can Make You a Better Game Dev

So I made a 3D game for a really weak handheld to see if limitations really make you a better game developer.

I wish I could be 100% FOSS. The video was edited in Final Cut, Reaper (love Audacity, but it has trouble with VSTs and non-destructive editing), and the Affinity Suite. I think GIMP and Krita have come a great way towards becoming a Photoshop/Affinity Photo replacement, but Inkscape is lacking imo

1 week into a 2 week jam. Kinda shocked that I made pretty much everything you see here outside of the fonts and animations 😳

Glad you liked it! Funny how I saw your review and then got this notification at the same time lol.

A feature that got cut for time was the ability to select from 1 of 3 wild cards instead of getting a random one. That would’ve helped the player agency a ton IMO. Might do a post-jam patch.

Unlike Balatro, where you pick the cards you want to play for combos, in Pythia you rely solely on RNG to influence the playing card hand by using a tarot card deck. However, every change you make is permanent, shaping the rest of your run. It’s a constant balance of risk vs reward.

Pythia passed the Steam Deck test! Unfortunately it’s the weakest hardware in my house to test on lol. It actually worked pretty well with touch controls 🤔
