A few months ago I reached out to a friend’s acquaintance who specializes in solar panel. I asked about portable solar panels that could be deployed as needed and connected to a battery in case of power outage. He told me it’s just not how these things work. I hope balcony solar proves him wrong.

Founders Over Funders. Inventors Over Investors. - Anil Dash A blog about making culture. Since 1999.

So much of what's wrong with tech started from one simple phenomenon: focusing on the money-movers instead of people who actually *make* shit. Real technology matters. Inventors over investors, every time. Founders over funders. Writing code > writing checks. www.anildash.com/2025/10/24/f...

Posting dummy of "Impressions of Mr. Pyridine" that illo cane from, share and enjoy. It was the proposed sequel to "Adventures of Mr. Pyridine" floppy comix but Fantagraphics had enough of my uncanny ability to not "get it". So now you can "get it".

A saintly, skeletal bird-man (Loplop) blesses the matrimonial union between two humans. The groom sports a reptilian tail. The setting is a desolate lake show, possibly the Dead Sea. This wood-engraving collage was done for a proposed sequel to my "Adventures of Mr. Pyridine" (Fantagraphics).
I once had an impressive collection of British Victorian and Edwardian periodicals, including several bound volumes of The Strand, back when such things could be found in a library sale. I did a bit of collaging with them, in the Max Ernst spirit, until a rascal absconded with my loot. That's when I began to get serious about my crosshatching and eventually did a good business in aping that particular line style with pen and ink. Everyone else uses scratchboard for such things but inking with a pen gets a more accurate line feel, a warmer look that scrapers can never get. Mostly because scraperboard was really meant as a technical illustration device, back when running halftoned greys on line art was too dicey on cheaper paper stocks.

Ecce hominid!

From an unpublished (and probably unpublishable) homage to Max Ernst, Maldoror and Hebdomeros, the Holy Trinity of a misspent artistic youth.

A Calvin and Hobbes strip where Calvin’s dad is going to read him a bedtime story.

First panel:
Calvin’s dad, scanning a bookshelf: “What story would you like tonight? We can read anything except—“
Calvin, from bed, excited: “The Voynich Manuscript!”

Second panel:
Calvin’s dad, deeply exasperated: “NO! No Voynich Manuscript tonight! We’ve tried to decipher that book a million times!”
Calvin, yelling: “I want the Voynich Manuscript!”

Third panel:
Calvin’s dad, trying to reason with him: “Look, you *know* how the story goes! You’ve memorized the whole thing! It’s completely unreadable!”
Calvin: “I want mysterious glyphs and sigils!”

Fourth panel:
Calvin, in bed and staring wide-eyed into the dark: “Wow, the story was different *that* time!”
Hobbes, also in bed and staring: (a long string of incomprehensible characters).

A night living room scene in the style of an oil painting. A lamp on the left lights up a room with a blue couch and orange pillows. In the background, a blue moon shines through an open window.

I have had night terrors for as long as I can remember. The other night, I got up and focused on a Pythonista project to keep the dread at bay. In hindsight, this music project is oddly appropriate!

Goodnight from the After Midnight Pinballers gang, flipping targets at the Ad Astra arcade and sharing cursed cabinet rumours with subdued reverence. Goodnight from St. Wendreth at Melford, holy water bubbling in its font as the Havoc Hunt flies above. Goodnight from Hookland.

Goodnight from Jeff Tabor, noticing the uneasiness that always sits upon his grandfather’s old chair is much more active when Thatcher the Iron Witch is on the TV news. Goodnight from Tom Woodford, attempting wine exorcism on memories of Hoarse Hag sighting. Goodnight from Hookland.

Some who see the high, tree-enfolding hedges of summer as no more than green walls. I am a witch. I see not a green wall, but pharmacy for future ills. I see not a green wall, but a parade of wild augury. The lanes are lined with magical potential. – #EmilyCBanting, 1982 #WitchSky

Goodnight from Si Brunt, walking Whisper Wood and worrying for the first time about why tonight's lunar light is called a 'Stalking Moon'. Goodnight from Tom Mutch, full of tired, repetitive thoughts about the mystery of what melted the barbed wire fence up at Tarbox Field. Goodnight from Hookland.

Nobody is entirely sure if the council’s latest bit of public art is meant to represent the spectral Viking ship that occasionally troubles the creek or the Krath Nagav. I’m not sure what public art is for, but if it’s giving little children the terrors, it’s a bloody masterpiece. - Barry Tey #VOH

The witch learns from the land. The witch learns the land. She knows where its songs are sung loudest, the finding of its thousand thresholds. Her tongue is made strong from speaking its occulted names. Its secret languages are tattooed on her bones. – #Emily C Banting, 1982 #WitchSky

A man in the foreground stands near a ledge overlooking a vast, lush valley that vanishes into the distance. The valley is surrounded by dark mountains and there are the silhouettes of four dragons in the sky.

It is not enough for a county to have castles in various states of tumbling, it must have haunted castles, cursed castles. Hookland being in the first order of these things goes further. It boasts stone towers which wander, broken-toothed citadels which are only sometimes there. - #CLNolan

« Projet pro », « projet vacances »… Marre d’entendre parler de « projets » à toutes les sauces ? La philosophe Amaena Guéniot propose de « déconstruire les structures capitalistes » liées à cette notion, pour mieux la réorienter « vers des finalités désirables » 👇

While I am an advocate of witch graft, I also believe in a witchery of stillness and listening. For magic is relationships and no good relationship can exist without listening to each other. To be still and hear the song of the stream is an act of witchcraft. – #EmilyCBanting, 1982 #WitchSky

When we were kids, we lensed the world through 'Glass Corridor' and 'Doctor Who'. Every bit of odd looking industrial infrastructure became a secret UNIT base or secret scientific research centre. All our tomorrows were sci-fi, so of course these things were too. – Mark Lester #VOH
