About one quarter of the 20659 proteins in the human proteome have TMDs. Most have 1 TMD, there's about 1000 with 7 TMDs. Details are in the post, which is linked.

How many proteins in the human proteome have transmembrane domains? And of those, how many examples with n TMDs are there?
Couldn't find an answer, so I calculated it from Uniprot data with some #RStats magic (and I did some model organisms while I was at it). 🧪

1. The paper with the implausibly large effects of Omega-3 fatty acids on mental health was now retracted. A little thread on the process where @ianhussey.mmmdata.io and I was involved.

It’s absolutely incredible that one of the largest Japanese-run Go servers, which has been running since 1992, is still accessed entirely via Telnet. And while most players use GUI clients that use Telnet under the hood, you can still connect manually and get ASCII graphics streamed to you

It's. Unfortunately faculty jobs are more likely to go to those who has those papers and many of us may get fired from faculty jobs if we don't get them... So we also have to be aware of the business context we live in.

Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez: “Here in Spain, we are approving and advancing a process to regularise half a million immigrants.

“And I want to say to the Right and the Far Right who oppose this: Spain is the daughter of migration and will not become the mother of xenophobia.”

Feels like this paper on protein-templated DNA synthesis by a natural enzyme warrants some comment.

We all known A*azon tends to sell books bellow list prices, but I've recently found them selling books at below WHOLESALE prices. I know this because I own a store. That's fucked up.
Anyways, support your local book stores. Shit's tough.

Thinking about this more, the 2 and 3 year bans are real career killers… who’d hire a tenure track candidate, or an (associate) professor that has one of those hanging around their necks?

Congrats on “opening” a strait that was open six weeks ago, and all it cost was at least 13 dead service members, thousands of dead Iranian civilians, tens of billions in taxpayer dollars, our loss in global standing, and the Iranian regime’s increase in power. Phenomenal work.

Brussels launched an age checking app. Hackers say it took them 2 minutes to break it. Cyber experts say they have found holes in Brussels' age verification app, despite claims by the EU executive that it is "technically ready.”

That would ban many of us from applying. Not that I'll ever get one of these grants, but my institution limits what I can apply based on whether they pay indirect. So only those in big/wealthy institutions will be allowed to apply. As someone else said, that's called the Mathew effect.

This renewed system:

- Punishes people for taking any real risk (so much for funding high-risk research!).

- Wastes applicants' time (still have to write that B2, baby! Even if no one reads it and you get banned!)

- Reduces mental well-being of ECRs... Yet another notch lower.

If they didn't want us treating grant applications and the research funding adquisition system as a lottery, they shouldn't be running a lottery system with more fundable grants than money.

I'm sure people will wrongly use this to insult Mamdani's wife. What it should do instead is open a larger conversation about how little we value art in our society, and how many talented artists can only create if they have family support, and how much valuable art we are not getting as a result.
