Well to be fair *nearby* (in space and time) I'm sure it does. Which I unironically think is the whole point: the distance-decay rate of positive vs. negative externalities.

Oh if only all this computational power could be socialised for actual research and, who knows, a renewed wave of distributed economic calculation. I mean, it can't get more inefficient than current allocation of resources. Yes I'm talking about seizing data centres for the public good. 🙂

Most of what's been packaged and marketed as AI (apart from LLM chatbots) has been around for a while. In my masters there was a track that used to be called Geoinformatics, now it's GeoAI 🤢 nothing changed. I still think purposeful modelling with current computational power has huge potential tho.

Honestly big tech has always excelled at creating "innovations" no one asked for and pushing it down our throats. That's what you get from over-powered executives and overly-paid middle-managers completely disconnected from 1) actual workers, and 2) actual users of their technologies.

I mean I'm still waiting for mobiliteit.lu to tell me if I'm likely to catch my bus connection or not - it doesn't seem too hard
