Kind of want a PhD in that just because it sounds cool.

Lucy Mangan, TV critic for the Guardian does, yes. I mean, it is in her job title.

I assumed that was some sort of meta-joke.

Well I guess you got your answer.

+1 for Volvo open sourcing their software. I wish Audi would do the same, their mobile app is shockingly bad.

"The pessimistic view is that investors are backing an unrealistic outcome – that AGI will not happen without further breakthroughs."
That's not the pessimistic view, it's the realistic view, and the one generally shared by people who don't have trillions riding on it not being true.

I agree with that - that's just not what I think of when someone describes "cultural fit". It sounds like the complete opposite.

Surely those goals are contradictory. If he values diversity and inclusion, then that's the exact opposite of cultural fit. It's cultural diversity.

The phrase "cultural fit" has big wavy red flags and flashing lights all over it. I wouldn't go near a job that made that a core criterion with a bargepole.

LotR 4K has no special features at all, which given what the DVDs came with is criminal. I ended up multiplexing all the commentary tracks onto the 4K version with MKV tools.

This is still a problem now, and is one of the reasons Google rewrote the rendering backend for Flutter.

He's not smart enough. He'd probably misunderstand how it works and bet the wrong way.

I didn't inform them I was having solar installed either. The only reason they were informed at all later was because I wanted an export tariff. Otherwise there's absolutely no need for them to know about any devices I use in my house.

3 months ago 0 0 1 0

Sure, but that's for the installer to sort out. I already have an export tariff because I have solar. If I have batteries installed, I'm under no obligation to tell Octopus anything. As far as they no I just continue importing and exporting.

This depends on the tariff. There is no such requirement on the Intelligent Go tariff.

That would be a concern for the network operator (Electricity NW in my region), not Octopus.

3 months ago 0 0 1 0

There's not really any way for Octopus to know how you are using their electricity, so I'm not sure how they could possibly prevent it, any more than they could prevent you from using a specific brand of kettle.

Reminds me of the story of how Steve Sasson at Kodak developed a digital camera in 1975.

Well yes, I think that's probably crossing the line!

To be fair, that XKCD image is, if anything, underused.

All photography, even film photography, involves some decisions being made about how those photos will look by people other than the photographer - unless you go to the trouble of developing the film yourself. Digital photos would be virtually unrecognisable without some level of processing.
