The great and irrepetible Monroe Price left us one hour ago.

Both professionally and personally it is very difficult to imagine a world where Monroe is not around and cannot be reached.

He was a mentor and a friend. We went to many places. We did many things. We had fun.

What Europe’s Digital Services Act Says About Age Assurance | TechPolicy.Press Radical and disproportionate measures such as outright bans are simplistic solutions incompatible with human rights standards, writes Joan Barata.

The EU Commission guidelines on article 28 DSA promote a flexible, risk-based approach to protecting minors online. Outright bans are simplistic solutions incompatible with comprehensive child protection. My piece for @techpolicypress.bsky.social

This letter is important. It is a careful, detailed, scholarly, and accurate explanation of the elements of the DSA and EU law that prevent the DSA from being a "censorship" law in the first place. The list of EU expert signatories is stellar. @hutko.bsky.social @joanbarata.bsky.social

Another important (and even more neglected) area is the cases where DSCs at the national level use DSA provisions to create extraterritorial effects within the EU and beyond the Member State in question.

1 year ago 3 0 1 0

I believe we need to differentiate between extraterritorial effects as something established and mandated under DSA (which I would say is not clearly contemplated or endorsed) and the extraterritorial impact of "ordinary" DSA enforcement based on platforms characteristics and business models.

I believe it was biased to identify cases of non-transparent decision making with "secret courts", which usually refers to something else. In any case, this assertion is included in a highly subjective and politicised part of the statement.

In Romania the so-called Brussels effect (in its internal EU perspective) has taken a whole new dimension. One of the reasons put forward by relevant authorities to annul the elections was the alleged violation of #DSA by #TikTok Beyond wider geopolitical implications, definitely a case to follow

So it seems there was a candidate behind this campaign and for many other reasons he was most voted in the first round. Very interesting & scary: a rather artificial engagement campaign led to virality that influenced TikTok’s *search bar* and further amplified the candidate 🫠

US Approves UN Cybercrime Convention That Legitimizes Censorship Despite industry, experts, and lawmakers' concerns, the Biden administration supports a UN cybercrime treaty with authoritarian leaders.

The treaty will allow authoritarian states to criminalize free expression and peaceful assembly under the guise of preventing cybercrime. A lack of due process or rule of law requirements will endanger those expressing an opinion that displeases an authoritarian regime.
