The string of horrible furry media coverage in the early 2000s didn't exist in a vacuum.

It was part of a massive post-9/11 push for jingoism and "normalcy" on TV. So everybody "different" or "marginal" would be portrayed as a villain or be made the target of mockery.

Hence furry marginalization.

It is pretty interesting to look at the kind of information people in the fandom (and everywhere else, really) used to be comfortable with putting out there for everybody else to see.

Very different from today.

Not acknowledging its existence won't make it not exist.

People who look for "dirt" on furries are very aware of this comic.

And I think it's important for younger furs to know what can happen to our fandom when you let haters take the reigns of your narrative, as was the case in those days.

A warning should be given to anybody planning to look through the pages of that publication:

Homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia and other prejudices ABOUND.

To say that people who personally knew Keller and found themselves depicted in that comic book were livid is a euphemism.

"Shawn Keller's Horrifying look at the furries" was a pretty disgusting and , quite frankly, libelous piece of crap comic book where Keller would attack real members of the fandom by depicting them en masse as sex predators, perverts, and deranged manchildren.

The Freezing Furs were a (now defunct) group that was founded in response to the Burned Furs.

They believed (rightly so) that Burned Furs were a hate group seeking to rally support for a "cleansing" of the furry fandom by dehumanizing and discounting folks that had been part of it from the start.

The Pride Lands Online was a web-based fanzine created by and for fans of Disney's The Lion King. The webzine had 7 released issues between 1996 and 1999.

Extremely sad news this morning.
