Posts by Prof Clare Brock

I keep getting emails and office visits from publishers who want “just a minute of my time” to discuss how I teach courses. Just putting it out there that I’m happy to do this for a reasonable consulting fee. Please pitch me the pay rate for all future/ initial contacts going forward.

Check out our new little paper with a simple but surprising (to many) fact: most “special interests” that lie by the govt don’t have a PAC for campaign donations. All too often lobbying and campaign contributions are conflated. With @clarebrock.bsky.social and @alexanderfurnas.com

We found a kids oral B app on the iPad for brushing teeth and it is the only thing that has stopped the incessant story telling / singing / gymnastics during tooth brushing time.

Actually Citizens United says that government can restrict speech in the case of the appearance of corruption (eg the APPEARANCE of possible quid pro quo) because that constitutes a compelling interest of the state. The logic of the court is that democracy is undermined when gov appears corrupt

I’m convinced that airlines intentionally make the flying process more frustrating and unpleasant than it needs to be, especially contacting customer service for anything.

For the second time in a year, a student has suggested that I start a podcast. Let me start by saying 1) I would never. But 2) I’m so flattered that a student thinks anyone would ever want to listen to what I have to say.

Are lobbyists influential? The public sure thinks so, but applied political science since lobbying registration data emerged (late 90s) struggled to produce evidence that it does. In new review @wmjunk.bsky.social @heathbrown.bsky.social and I chart a wave of research showing that lobbying matters.

The Nutritionist Marion Nestle Meets Her Moment, At 88 After five decades in the field of nutrition, Dr. Marion Nestle thought she had seen it all. Then came “Make America Healthy Again.”

Here's is the main reason people buy into so many bad diet & nutrition ideas: "The best advice is boring."

I've been writing about diet for decades, and I think @marionnestle.bsky.social has been more consistently right than pretty much anyone.

I'll never forget @raulpachecovega.bsky.social calling this an "Author Meets Fans" panel at COPPR when discussing @clarebrock.bsky.social's awesome book. @sam-workman.bsky.social did a good job either thought provoking questions, but maybe we stop calling these "critics" panels.
