I am incredibly proud that my doctoral student, William Favell, defended his excellent dissertation, demonstrating that development aid is indeed effective. Now he's off to a post-doc at Ohio State.

The Film That Explains Contemporary America “The Sorrow and the Pity” has lessons for how authoritarianism takes root—and how to fight against it.

"Restoring democracy required opponents of fascism—nationalists, republicans, and Communists—to work together despite serious misgivings about one another’s views. Purity tests had to wait until the war was over."

I think a big part of this is going to be the development of a positive, forward looking platform that centers on key issues. We don't need to insult people to propose a governing platform; if anything, insults and derision dilute the power of any future program.

Precisely - there are key strategic reasons to not be outwardly cruel.

From a virtue cultivation perspective, there are also pretty sizable normative reasons to not indulge our darkest spirits. We have spent a decade aghast at the cruelty of MAGA. Perhaps we should try something different.

This approach to politics - derisive, condescending, mean-spirited - is precisely the opposite of what we need. If we want to build a coalition to bring back a decent politics and impress upon people the value of democratic norms, we ourselves need to be decent and uphold norms of civility.

We all recall Przeworski’s maxim that democracies are where you just kinda relax and let the other party win by not contesting elections. Classic CP, folks

I don’t know who this person is. Maybe she’s terrible. 🤷🏻 but after a decade+ of cruel, mean-spirited politics, perhaps we should endeavor for something less nasty?

I suspect many pa. Jews have been treated the way she describes and I think the obsession with rabbinic J. has thinned our ranks.

Just to push back here - this rhetoric assumes that antisemitism is somehow a logical or coherent response to the actions of Israel. It is not. Many Jews, myself included, abhorred the 9/11-era Islamophobia that was revealed in response to the actions of Muslim-majority states and terror groups.

The brave Hungarian freedom fighters of 1956 were brutally crushed by the Soviet Union. But their Revolution was the "first tear in the Iron Curtain."

May the people of Hungary succeed today, 70 years later, in defeating those seeking to impose a new iron curtain on the free world.
