New from 404 Media: Proton Mail, the privacy-focused email service, gave authorities data that let the FBI unmask an anonymous 'Stop Cop City' protester. It was payment data linked to the anonymous email account. From that, FBI ID'd them, then tracked their movements www.404media.co/proton-mail-...

“I’ve reviewed over 50 sticky toffee puddings” is an incredibly powerful way to begin a video
📚 I'm pleased to release my syllabus and course materials for "Coding the News," the class I'm leading this semester for the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY.
The White House did a dishonest y-axis so I fixed their y-axis for them, you’re welcome White House

dplyr 1.2.0 is out now and we are SO excited!
- `filter_out()` for dropping rows
- `recode_values()`, `replace_values()`, and `replace_when()` that join `case_when()` as a complete family of recoding/replacing tools
These are huge quality of life wins for #rstats!

Federal law enforcement agents shot and killed a man in Minneapolis on Jan. 24 according to local police officials. DHS told Fox News that the man was “armed with a gun”. A video of the shooting appears to show that a gun was taken from the man before the first shot was fired. x.com/BillMelugin_...
In the newsletter: The Open Visualization Academy is almost here. We launch next week; save the date! openvisualizationacademy.beehiiv.com/p/the-open-v...

Our Rowboat tool is about instantly seeing what's in a dataset, so we added a Chrome Extension that lets you open random datasets from all over the internet. Right click, poof! 0.2 seconds later we see what this dataset actually looks like.
No workspace to set up, no waiting for the app, no db.
Today, @vonter.bsky.social and I launched cbfc.watch, an archive of over 100k censorship records for ~18k movies released in India since 2017. For the first time, you can search for any movie and see how they were modified before release.
The site is fun to explore, but here's some #dataviz in it!
An illustrated gif of two conveyer belts, one with a traditional media story moving quickly and one with a visual story moving slower.
📊 Visual journalism often takes weeks to produce, even though a similar written article may only take a day or two.
Jonas Oesch takes a closer look at a typical visual story to uncover why it takes so long to produce and what can be done to speed up the process.

A selection of custom marks generated with Observable Plot. From top to bottom: A categorical bar chart with black hachured patterns in 6 different directions; A faceted bar chart using Isotope symbols showing cattle, pigs and sheep in red, grey and blue; a sequence of geometric symbols in blue gradually increasing in size: circle, triangle, square and fan, repeating 3 times, below which is a sequence of 12 human-like figures also increasing in size; A curve made up of ellipses that transition from vertical to horizontal to cicrcular shapes; a set of thee dot and whisker symbols in black and white; an abstract geometric arrangement of teardrop shapes in green to brown colours forming concentric bands away from the bottom left; a map of cycle hire journeys in London represented by asymmetric curves in a range of colours, overlaid over the river Thames; a map on London boroughs symbolised with dots of varying density with the highest density of dots towards the outside, lowest in the centre; a 'chart' of flowers of different shades of purple and orange.
Want to create your own custom marks in @observablehq.com Plot, but don't want to go full D3?
I've created a guide with 6 approaches of varying sophistication for specifying reusable custom marks:

Where did DOGE's recruits come from? Here's what we've discovered.
In late 2024, a group of young software engineers fanned out across online chat groups and Discord servers. At least three were associated with Palantir or its cofounder—and Musk ally—Peter Thiel.
Unfortunately, all Census TIGER/Line and cartographic boundary shapefiles are down as of this evening.
This means that the tigris #rstats and pygris #Python packages will not work, and geometry support in tidycensus will also fail.
The Census API, for now, is still up.
It feels like every time I investigate something in central London, it leads back to Asif Aziz. Please read this about the Prince Charles Cinema, exclusive deals to import Nestle products to wartorn Angola, and property deals in every corner of the capital.

After spending more than an hour on the phone with Microsoft Support, I have learned:
1. It is impossible to disable Copilot in OneNote, Excel, PowerPoint, or Windows itself.
2. It will not become possible to do so for another month AT THE EARLIEST.

A screenshot of the Die Zeit website. It is a photo of Musk in black and white doing the Hitler “seig heil” salute - but the actual salute is blocked out by blue material on the left hand side of the photo. The headline is underneath.
A paper that understands its responsibility, in a country that knows it when it sees it.
Impressive from Die Zeit. Refuses to show the salute, but calls it out for what it so obviously was.
Headline: “A Hitler Salute is a Hitler Salute is a Hitler Salute”

“Will pay any amount.”
Feels like one of those futile pleas we’re going to hear from wealthy people more and more in the era of climate change.
