Monday's Headlines: Permanent Paseo Edition - Streetsblog New York City We journeyed to Jackson Heights to celebrate a milestone in the life of the 34th Avenue open street. Plus other news.

Sunday was a celebration by and for the people of Jackson Heights as the 34th Avenue open street — the city's self-proclaimed "gold standard" of car-light spaces — was officially co-named "Paseo Park." buff.ly/juEKkja

The 78th Street story would be a great prologue

A busy first day as your Mayor-elect: early morning interviews, transition announcements and meetings. More to say on all of it tomorrow.

But a highlight was lunch with my Congresswoman @aoc.bsky.social at Laliguras Bistro in Jackson Heights.

The serious way to pursue this would be to pick a pantheon of "anti-secession heroes of the South," and fund a group to create a systematic education campaign. Resolutions honoring their birthdays, street renamings, school curricula, and of course statues. That's their playbook.

Fixing Penn doesn't fix the railroad organization problem. Fixing Penn would be the downstream result of fixing the railroad organization problem.

I had a similar ranking in mind (with Lander at #2), but with @jessicaramosqns.bsky.social unfathomable endorsement of Cuomo she needs to come off my list.

Late addition here. In the subsubgenre of animals learning parenting after the apocalypse, read Kira Buxton's Feral Creatures. But first you should really read Hollow Kingdom -- no parenting, but fun read!

Cuomo pretends he’s NY’s ‘hero’ during final days in office Gov. Andrew Cuomo is milking his final days in office, keeping his successor at arm’s length and capitalizing on his final performance, according to political observers.

He was always always always more obsessed with the optics of being in charge than in doing the actual work to ask the state's agencies what needed to get done and providing the leadership to deliver. nypost.com/2021/08/22/c...

Don't forget the time he overruled state and city public health experts for the sake of a photo op appearing to be in charge on Ebola.

This is incredibly disappointing. By no stretch of the imagination was Cuomo a good-government governor. @citizensunionny.bsky.social

NYC is a wild ride.

We need someone in charge who has experience, integrity and real solutions to:
👊fight corruption,
❎end wasteful spending,
🏘️build affordable housing, and
💪stand up to Donald Trump

All while keeping their cool.

I’m Brad Lander, and I’m running to be your next Mayor.

Not sure this is entirely on target for your question, but when your daughter is a bit older, you both may enjoy the excellent Hilda series (books and video). Ideal for kids 7+ who are open to a bit of danger. Deals beautifully with single mom & adventurous daughter relationship.

On the optics front, Dems should lean in to saving the sacred, dignified space of the White House from Trump's "frilly gold stickers that make us look weak and silly." If the parties were reversed, Fox would go to war against this.

Battery-electric seems like a good solution for dealing with stretches that may be difficult to electrify. Did LIRR make the right choice to abandon study of this technology?

Sen @jessicaramosqns.bsky.social is doing the right thing here. I'm all for development there, and I'm sure there's a solution that benefits both to Steve Cohen and the community. But a casino will be very damaging to Corona and Flushing. Shame on @liunewyork.bsky.social for overlooking that.

We don't need the casino for that.

No amount of this will help against a candidate who is at 47% in the first round. Public needs to be convinced he is unacceptable.

His preference for simplicity over complexity in the presentation of data was very effective. And deceptively difficult to emulate: it takes talent and insight to find the trends that reveal the story.
