A handout reading "JIMMY LI'S NIGHTHAWKS—coming soon to kickstarter" with a QR code and art of three dudes around a tiny floating house, which peels off to become a cool sticker. In the background the three dudes sticker is on my water bottle and a black cashbox alongside a Goats Flying Press "Comics Against All Odds" sticker

No fooling. When we saw Jimmy Li’s NIGHTHAWKS in a portfolio review by page 4 we were impressed. By page 10 we knew we had to publish him. And when we read the whole book it couldn’t be clearer that he’s a cartoonist you’ll be hearing about sooner or later.

Make it sooner and meet him today!!

I pointed this out in another reply but I suspect this fairly easy technique is a simplification of an extremely difficult Japanese technique seen here:

I assume the evolution was from omurice > chopstick twirl technique (much tougher and I still want to master it) > the egglab version in my original post

Instagram kept showing me these videos from an Australian egg restaurant (?) and I thought it looked fun and easy so I tried copying the technique. Nailed it on my third try and now I nail it every time. It's a gimmick, it's easy but it looks great and you can delight someone by serving it to them

[old man rant] When I worked at Marvel they did the kid+new-reader-friendly Thor: The Mighty Avenger by @hotelfred.bsky.social & @chrissamnee.bsky.social—it was GREAT—but they didn't know how to sell it. Their only metric was direct market Weds. Warrior superhero fans, and they deemed it a failure.

The publisher of Spider-Man can't figure out how to make comics for children. They leave that to Disney or license it out to other publishers. Even DC's been doing good YA stuff for 10+ years but Marvel can't figure out how to copy them. Ooh it makes me so furious

3 days ago 130 27 12 7

This is not specific to yesterday's layoffs, which came from Disney, but Marvel's razor-thin margins shrink constantly, they can't hire new editors, they slash rates, they let people go
but a little long-term strategy could build a profitable YA division. They laid off their one YA editor yesterday.

Every year the data shows middle grade/YA comics are bigger than ever. Virtually every comics publisher that turns a profit does it with their MG/YA line. But Marvel, they can't be bothered. It's negligence and I'd even call it a failure of leadership. Every laid-off editor could still have a job.

I used to have this in stock in case I ever cut my dog's nails to the quick, a problem I avoided by simply never cutting his nails. But I did use the powder on myself on a bad cut once
it works!
