Seeing these things on the census hits home. Years later, my grandmother ended up living in Summerhill and would have gone to mass in the chapel in the convent on Sean McDermott St. that housed that Magdalene Laundry. I think it was run by the same order of nuns.

My great-grandmother died in childbirth and my grandmother was sent to an "orphanage" (industrial school) in Sligo at 4 years of age. She wasn't really an orphan but, for some reason that I've never quite understood, her father gave up his 4 children. She's listed as an "inmate" on the census.

I'm biased but it seemed odd that the sports report on RTÉ's evening news started with 6 Nations rugby, then GAA hurling and football and only then covered Ireland's important win over Poland in Lansdowne Road earlier today. I suppose at least it got higher billing than the Premier League.

Found her. Listed as "Chrissie" rather than "Christina", one of many "inmates" at 8 years old 🙄😢

Thanks

Thanks. I was just doing name searches but that's a good idea.

She was orphaned at 4 and would have been 8 in 1926. I think she would have been in Tubbercurry by then but I know she also doesn't some time in Goldenbridge but I think that was only initially.

Tubbercurry probably means it had to have been Banada Abbey, I suppose.

Might something similar have been done for children in orphanages? My grandmother would have been in one at the time and I'm having trouble finding her by name.

That's a hell of a first concert. My own was just 5 days before that: Big Country in Dublin. I did eventually see Prince but not until 6 years later.

Debunked: The PSNI was not involved with breaking up fuel protests in Cork, Galway or Dublin Similar claims appeared during the 2024 protests in Newtownmountkennedy

Fair play to @thejournal.ie who time and time again debunk Irish far-right fake news and disinformation. Just like this latest one right here. It shows how stupid the Irish far-right are when they fell for this.

It's quite extraordinary that this article doesn't include the name of the TD who gave a character reference for a convicted sex offender.

Genuinely one of the worst ministers in recent memory. Simply not up to the job. His every pronouncement is just the prelude to the inevitable walkback from more able politicians.

A lot of Orbán's American fans are saying that this election proved he was never an authoritarian in the first place.

This is completely wrong — and, in fact, betrays a complete misunderstanding of both Hungarian politics and modern authoritarianism.

Here's why.

How Ireland's far-right movement got involved in the fuel protests and tried to hijack them While many are protesting fuel costs, far-right actors and international figures are using the movement to push anti-immigrant narratives.

What a well written article that details the far-right element of the fuel protests. Well worth a read.

Meet the former fashion blogger and shady doctor behind the ‘30,000 dead’ Iran psy-op - The Grayzone Western officials seized on a dubious death toll of 30,000 protesters to escalate against Iran. The number originates with a single, clearly compromised source. But a zealously pro-war Guardian report...

The Guardian hired a monarchist activist and promoted her within 4 years for exactly this purpose; to lie about Iran and justify the West's attack on it.

It is very easy to become accustomed to Trump’s ravings, and laugh them off. That’s a dangerous thing to do.

When Trump states: “A whole civilization will die tonight,” he is threatening to commit genocide.

We can’t allow that to happen. Congress must end this war NOW.

“I happen to believe that we can't kick the can down the road any longer in trying to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear bomb,” Hegseth said on the January 8, 2020, edition of Fox & Friends. “What better time than now to say, we're starting the clock, you've got a week, you've got X amount of time before we start taking out your energy production facilities? We take out key infrastructure. We take out your missile sites. We take out nuclear developments. … We take out port facilities.”

“Iran has been in endless war with us for 40 years,” he explained. “Either we put up and shut up now and stop it, or we kind of wait, go back to the table, and let them dither while they attempt to continue to develop the capabilities to do precisely what they said they want to do. So either we — we're honest about the nature of this regime, or I think we miss a moment.”

Indeed, Trump’s ultimatum seems cribbed from a strategy Hegseth urged him to undertake in January 2020, saying, “What better time than now to say, we're starting the clock, you've got a week, you've got X amount of time before we start taking out your energy production facilities?"

25th amendment. Impeachment. I will support any avenue to remove Donald Trump from office. We cannot leave this man in charge of America’s nuclear weapons as he threatens to end an entire civilization. And Congress must not fund this reckless administration.
