Great news from MIT - 12 people received first sacraments tonight. 3 Baptisms, another 6 First Communions, and then 3 Confirmations.

Massive budget cuts for US science proposed again by Trump administration Budget proposal would also curb federal payments for scientific publishing.

Thanks! Yeah, archive.is has been flaky as of late. Original was www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Absolute gem from Nature archive.is/yAdmQ#select... Biologists had all the time in the world to establish IACR, USENIX, ICML, etc. Cutting funding is one thing, paying to publish in legacy "prestige venues" is a travesty. Just do an overlay over bioarXiv and call it a day.

‘Something’s Happening’: Catholic Converts Surge in Many U.S. Dioceses ‘It’s the Holy Spirit,’ Bishop Frank Dewane told the Register. ‘Yes, we follow promptings, also. But I think it’s the work of the Holy Spirit right now in society and in the Church.’

Arch Linux: "Guys, trust me -- systemd is the future. It's clean, fast, and modern, and look at those boot time gainz!"
systemd: "Thanks! Anyway, here’s a mandatory birthDate field for your local login."

I'm impressed that Qwen 35B was able to figure this one out.

Babe Ruth moment. Prediction: Nelsons just moved up to a standing invitation for every January 1.

Boston doesn't need to be reimagined. Red Sox play in a 100 year old baseball stadium a mile away, and that's what we want.

The board thinks Nelsons works for the BSO. Superficial take.
Does the BSO exist for what Nelsons does?

Berkshire Eagle: If Andris Nelsons' dismissal is a matter of conflicting 'vision,' then BSO should state what its vision is.

Board: "we need a taylor swift symphony. the donors want tiktok nights. can we do baby shark with the vienna phil aesthetic?"
Nelsons: *programs a 75-minute Shostakovich symphony, casually scores another Grammy*
Board: "Andris, you're not a team player."

Big news! The former Electric Coin Co team (now in a new company named “ZODL”) has raised $25m from a good group of investors to advance privacy as a principle and Zcash specifically! zodl.com/zodl-raises-...

A lot of people have asked me for my LaTeX setup. I finally got around to extracting (thanks, coding agents) and open sourcing it: github.com/madars/tex-h...

Yes, you can for sure do that, e.g.:

# Run 5 times and provide the average/stddev
perf stat -r 5 -i -e minor-faults,major-faults \
env LD_PRELOAD=./mimalloc.so firefox --headless --screenshot /dev/null google.com

2 months ago 2 0 1 0

I think the ultimate test would be using Chrome or Firefox with WebDriver (for consistency). E.g., opening up GMail or something. Not sure how to bound the measurement variance there though. Can you use smalloc as just a LD_PRELOAD?

Pope nails diagnosis: chatbots as "hidden architects of emotional states", anthropomorphizing, cognitive atrophy. But prescription is, unfortunately, weak: "dialogue" is wishful thinking when builders build and engagement algos print money. Hard answer: out-build. www.vatican.va/content/leo-...

Very interesting! Thank you

Interesting! Another relevant axis of comparison would be fragmentation (both internal to allocator - if malloc'ing 33 bytes rounds up to 64, then it is almost 50% wasted; and external - if allocator produces a lot of gaps, then malloc might fail even if sum of allocated objects is meager).

Some quick thoughts on IACR - Chrome downloads quite often fail for Advanced Protection Program users, enabling silent failures. But Helios probably wants extra safeguards. e.g., you must open a file in Notepad and say what are the secret words 11, 17, and 35 in some 3-wise independent encoding.
