I know enough about ethnomusicology to be aware of the power of musical conventions, so I expect that these are simply what TEC is used to. Still, I was surprised.

I’ll be more clear: I was shocked at how unsingable I found most of the melodies. Meter, rhythm, range, pacing, melodic contours—I found all of it surprisingly unintuitive.

Of course not. I’m a classically trained musician, and I’ve got a pretty solid grasp on hymnody and congregational singing—just not in this tradition.

Thanks @adalehunt.bsky.social and @grouchydisciple.bsky.social for weighing in. I’ve only a few weeks of experience with the 1982, but what struck me most is how different the melodic conventions are from what I’m used to (Reformed, Lutheran, and Baptist—and no, not all at once 😂).

TEC friends who also are familiar with other traditions’ hymnody: how do you feel about the 1982 hymnal?

I don't care if everybody else is into it
I don't care if it's a popular refrain
I don't wanna be a puppet in a theater
I don't wanna play your video game

Tragedies occur because comfortable people value their comfort more than justice.

Though this is the norm, it must not make us numb.

Stand up, congress.
Stand up, church.
Stand up, friends.
Stand up, humans.
