In 4e, the target number was changed to become static and is always 5, so when you roll you are adding your attribute and skill together and count all 5’s and 6’s as successes, the number of successes you get must beat a threshold to succeed.

Rule of 6 I believe is only present in 1e - 3e, but all it means is if you roll a 6, you re-roll and add to it in order to beat target numbers greater than 6. Only 1 success is needed to succeed on the roll.

It helps create the feel of actual battle, people get distracted, people lose footing, etc. Using failed rolls as reasons for those things happening, giving another player an opening makes even someone who has whiffed all of their attacks feel like they’re still contributing to the fight.

Dude yes! I also like to narrate successes in combat as partly being due to previous failed attempts by party members.

Fighter misses: “You swing your longsword, but the berserker parries the attack”.

Thief hits: “As the enemy is parrying, you’re able to sneak in and stab him in the side.”
