We used to have a choice: buy goods cheaply from China or buy more expensive domestic products. Some still paid the extra to avoid supporting an authoritarian, totalitarian regime.

Reading/Watching the news is now link drinking poison. It's devastating what is happening and how people are excusing or backing the behaviour of Putin, Orban, Netanyahu, Erdogan and of course tRump.
Brexit was a foolish move. Sadly people were conned and that con was backed all the way to the Kremlin.
But some reciprocity seems appropriate. Spoil your ballot paper by all means, but it seems reasonable to have to participate. People also need to understand that voting is not all about "me, me, me", it's about trying improve the lot for the whole.
Civilisation is what lifts out of the survival of the fittest rule of the jungle. It endeavours to level the playing field so those less able (and yes, some of those less willing) do not get left behind or exploited...
