I am nearing the end of my Recurse Center batch and starting to look for work! If you know of something short- or long-term that might be a good fit, please be in touch. More details in the next post

I really, really enjoyed these two posts and keep coming back to them:

As a Brit chiefly working with Americans I am obsessed with all the differences between our two languages. This post was a delightful read!

[“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape? The moneylenders, the know-nothings, the authoritarians have us all in prison; if we value the freedom of the mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can.”]

As someone surrounded by London accents, merging l and w into one letter makes perfect sense

(Listen to some Scroobius Pip if this doesn't make sense)

The "Running Away Balloon Meme". The first panel shows a person labeled "me" happily reaching out to a yellow balloon labeled "Enjoying PTO".

The second panel depicts the same, except the person is being held back by a person labeled "illness", preventing the person from grasping the balloon labeled "enjoying PTO"

Even for someone reasonably au fait with the demented world of Sam Smith's pubs/Humphrey Smith, some great details in this piece. Comes across someone who doesn't understand that other people are as real as he is. www.theguardian.com/news/2024/de...

M&S classic mince pies pt 2:

Unfortunately let down by the pastry: it's too thick, and it's crumbly to the point of being floury, which adds up to the overall mouthfeel of the pie being far too dry.

Verdict: you probably wouldn't eat a second one if they were being handed out at an event.

Review #1: M&S classic mince pies (the basic tier at M&S). £0.46 each. Pt. 1:

Filling all the way to the top, excellent quantity. Very traditional flavour for the filling, not too sweet. Very discernible taste of brandy, which feels generous, and really adds a Christmas-y feel.

Obviously the only sensible option remaining is for me to buy every mince pie I see and review them all.

So here it is: my mince pie review 2024! There's just one of me so I won't be scoring or ranking them as I can't taste them all in one day, but I'll keep posting more as time goes on.

It was great because they performed the reviews with all the diligence you'd expect from an outlet more au fait with reviewing barely-differentiable graphics cards.

The magazine shut down a couple of years ago, and I feel lost and adrift without their mince pie reviews to guide me.

There used to be a magazine here called CustomPC that I was a big fan of during my computer building days.

Even after those, I used to buy one issue every year without fail: the Christmas issue where they taste tested all the mince pies available on the high street.

People are not wrong: this piece by Fara Dabhoiwala is all the superlatives. A masterful weaving of evidence, argument and story-telling.

Super-interesting dive into the security details! Some similarities to the old bittorrent / p2p scene, I wonder if any of these websites evolved out of that.
