It may not look like it, but there’s quite a lot of stuff under the plastic. The microphone has its own little amplified system, and the other stuff behind the ccd gets pretty warm. I’d imaging it suffers similar problems to Walkman devices with belt disintegration. They did a ton of engineering.

They might be okay, the batteries were far away from more of the electronics, from what I remember it had two contact points and wires running up through the grip. I’ll see if I still have mine somewhere.
