Behind the cash register at Bluestockings bookstore, high above a counter lined with tarot cards, stickers, and titles on Palestine, two shelves labeled "free store" hold bins of toothpaste, socks, pens, tampons, and opioid-overdose-prevention kits in the distinctive royal blue of the New York City health department. The bin holding the latter is the largest, with two strips of duct tape that read, "Free Narcan training! Only takes 15 minutes "

These services, however, may get the store evicted. In late October, Bluestockings received a 15-day "notice to cure" from its landlord, the first step in a commercial eviction process. It lists lease violations such as "unauthorized use of the premises as a medical facility," and states that the bookstore's practice of "permitting homeless individuals to use the basement restroom" and handing out food are creating a
"hazardous condition" for residential tenants.

For now, the bookstore continues to run its program and the neighbors continue to complain. Last month after work, Espasande was around the corner from the store, administering Narcan to someone who had overdosed, when a person walked by and said something to them as he passed.
"Nice community you've got there,"
Espasande recalls him saying. "That really, to be frank, fucked me up for a week," they said. "I don't know how to talk to people who walk past someone trying to keep someone else alive and think it's time for a quip about how I'm causing issues in the neighborhood."

Wow fuck everyone in this story except the bookstore and its patrons. That last sentence made my blood boil www.curbed.com/2023/12/blue...

it bums me out when i see pictures of people i generally think well of, and who i think try to be caring towards others, unmasked in places like public transit, in airports, and on planes.

like, i get it, you’re not worried about getting sick.

but *you* could make travel safer for others.

Very amusing ink and watercolor painting of two cats, one orange tabby and one white with black spots and tail, in fighting stances with locked eye contact. The tabby is crouched low and the black and white cat has its back arched and tail poofed. They seem to be on some kind of bamboo and shingle rail of some kind, raised above the ground. A tiny sliver of crescent moon hangs in the very pale blue sky behind them.

Google Researchers’ Attack Prompts ChatGPT to Reveal Its Training Data ChatGPT is full of sensitive private information and spits out verbatim text from CNN, Goodreads, WordPress blogs, fandom wikis, Terms of Service agreements, Stack Overflow source code, Wikipedia page...

Just saw this gentleman on the tube. Says "Masks not for you? Anyone can be exempt! No one can force you to wear a mask", etc. 🤦

An AWS manager noted “it goes without saying that this should not be discussed in a public channel.” And yet employees continued to discuss the issue in Slack. One noted: “I expect the [correction of error] report to be a real page-turner, if we’re ever allowed to see it.” “Correction of error” is how Amazon refers to postmortem reports, in which engineers work to describe the root causes of technical problems and identify fixes in the aftermath of incidents.

The program manager who started off the conversation asked if he should open a specific ticket to discuss the problems with digital sovereignty. “I wouldn’t suggest it,” a colleague said. “The broad and egregious nature of Q’s hallucinations yesterday (including potential Legal exposure) has been well reported in the existing ticket.”

Today (well. Yesterday) I learned what an advent calendar is (we don't really have that in India) and now I have already bought two. I need someone to cut me off from the Internet 😭

How David Zaslav Blew Up Hollywood A merger put him in the driver’s seat at Warner Brothers, one of the industry’s biggest studios. It has been a wild ride.

A long, great read: How David Zaslav Blew Up Hollywood
Not only looks at what happens when an outsider sets his sights on Hollywood but also the business (and economics) of streaming and the larger cultural shifts shaping film and business

I’m listening to this audiobook about crypto fraud and I just looked at the Bitcoin price out of morbid curiosity. In the last month it’s gone up from like $26k to $37k. It hasn’t been this high since early 2022. WTF.
